I close my tired eyes
And dream beneath a placid sky
In distant shades I walk
To silent nights
Where tears go by
My longing heart
Can hear you cry

I sense the coming storm
I find you, little child
I've come to take you home
Out of the sunless wild
We never will look back

Like twilight slumber falls
I roam the silent dream again
Beneath the blood-red moon
A shadow hides
The ghost-wind sighs
My broken heart
Can feel you die

I grab the phantom's hand
I hold another child
Must flee that shadow land
Escape the sunless wild
We have no time to lose

(Chorus):
Here comes the hungering dark
Here comes the night
So take my hand
We'll sail the light ship
'Til we reach God's golden land
Now breaks the dawn again
The hungering dark
Dies in the sun
The light ship sails on (sails on)

(Bridge): Pictures in my sleepy eyes
Of silver waves so deep
Painted there by wounded hands
That guide the sailors' sleep
To awaken in those arms
And cross the golden shore
Is living ever
Dying never more
Sail on, sail on, sail on...

I sense the coming storm
I find you, little child
I've come to take you home
Out of the sunless wild
We never will look back

Repeat chorus
