  My Beautiful Martyr

I really love this song, from the simple instrumentation to the sweet vocals to the beautiful and touching lyrics. I spin this one over and over again, and it seems to be a song very appropriate to the Easter season. Maybe one of these days when I learn to play guitar I will play this one at my church.

One question, though: can anyone tell me what the background/echo lyrics are? I didn't see them on the site, but what I can decipher appears to be acrostic - it makes some sense both vertically and horizontally.

Thanks,
-John

Great tune. The guitar melody after the chorus is perfection.

i love it too.

This is a post from Faint Scents etc in September of 2002:

"My Beautiful Martyr

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ever since I got Mister Buechner's Dream, the backing vocals for this song have bugged me. Because I can't figure them all out. I'll put what i hear below, and would be much obliged if any of you would help me out. I'm horrible at deciphering lyrics.

I believe your blood(like a river flows)
Runs wide and deep(towards an unknown sea)
And it stains the sky(???)
And floods the broken street(of our history)
That your prayers are saved(in the nail-scarred hands)
That your cry is heard(in the restless wind)
And that the world will hang(like the ??????)
On every word(to a world that's dead)"

and Gamgee added that the ?????? = "like a criminal man."

Ahh, thats cool. Thats a good site for chords, etc. as well.

I think the ones here on the site all came from Terry's text file from when he was writing them. Several of them weren't completely finished at the time. If anyone spots anything else that is unfinished - let us know and we can always go in and try to add whats missing.

If I remember correctly one of the band members had talked about tears coming to their eyes when the band first played the song back. I think that album has quite a few gems on it that may have gotten overlooked by a few people just because there were so many songs.

I've been listening to this one a lot lately. I don't think the echo is quite right here. I think it ends with "sky" but I don't think it says "broken". Does anyone else have any ideas? Or, is it "broken" and I am just not hearing right?
