  THREADS

I was listening to DFBB today. Reflecting now, I'm thinking of something I've often considered:
Many of us have a pinnicle album that we love. For me it is probably something like Knowledge & Innocense or Vox Humana and my all time fave song is "Soon".
I have always found myself seeking and desiring a common thread of music in Terry's/DA's material. Some songs and styles take me a bit longer to fall in love with. But there always remains my first love style.
If I look hard I can see it at work in many TST styles. This appreciation is what has allowed me to enjoy Americana and other venues of music. No body else, no other artist has been able to drag me into such frontiers!

How about y'all? What's your common thread? When a new TST album comes out, what "thing" are you first looking for--that part you can identify with; immediately love?

Or perhaps yer all above this sort of rot!

Musically the styles usually change from album to album. Terry's lyrics set him apart from just about anyone. I'm not sure how to describe them except to say brilliant.

I agree, of course. But throughout all the morphs and modulations, there are threads. For instance, to me there is a kinship between "Soon" and "Broken Ladders". But that "kinship" can also be detected (only so subtly) in some bangin' songs as well. Does that make sense?

I think I know what you're getting at.

But the lyrics are the glue that holds all of the songs together for me. Throughout all the styles. Now if your asking what songs do I play more than others at first when I get a new TST related album. I would have to say the harder tunes get my first looks. (Like Bibleland, John Wayne, Kalhoun, Zoom Daddy....see a trend)But I like all the styles from all the albums because they do them so well. As we all know.

I guess I look for common ground between albums. Maybe it's just because I am a musician that I see the progression from Alarma! to Doppelganger. As for Doppelganger to Vox Humana...

I think that "Who's Who Here" is similar to "Motorcycle", and MBD overall has the vocal stylings of Vox Humana.

I guess those are just things I tend to notice.

"Who's Who Here" is a perfect example (thanks arct-baby, can I call you arct-baby?) but so is ALL of MBD! Expectations can run a little unrealistically high for Terry-baby (can I call him Terry-baby?!) so when I don't get that anticipated innovation, or think I don't as in the case of SotH, then I feel let down!

Until I come to my senses of course...

I have about five or six categories of Taylor's music. Each time I hear a new Taylor CD It usually falls into one of those. The categories are not easy to describe because they are more emotional than musical. Each song reminds me of another, in a way, and I guess that makes them all connected.
