Just wanted to encourage everybody, if you haven't already, to pick up Derri Daugherty's new e.p. from Lo-Fidelity.com. Jeff is doing a good thing by giving us access to music from artists we love to hear, and by supporting his label, you're supporting his efforts. Please spread the word. I've posted this everywhere I think interested people would read it, but it keeps disappearing from the Choir board for some reason.

HELP!!! People, please help out here: There are people who are actually now selling the re-release of "10 Songs" on E-bay. The bids are actually up to $50. Please, please, PLEASE spread the word that the CDs are still available directly from lo-fidelity records (www.lo-fidelity.com) for $20 or so. You can also get them here at the Daniel Amos web store for same. Please let anyone you know who might be interested in 10 Songs know that NOBODY needs to pay $30 or $40 for a CD that is still readily available. This version has been completely remastered (trust me) and includes a very cool bonus track. This was an extremely difficult (and expensive) thing to get done, and rest assured that the money coming in is going to recoup costs and hopefully pave the way toward future cool releases. This has been such a sought-after item all these years, and the last thing we need is for people to needlessly capitalize on that.

I have to jump in here. The disdain you see for CCM is probably a little exaggerated, but at least for my part, heartfelt. Here's why.
The division of the world into "secular" and "Christian" is a recent phenomenon. While we have been admonished to set our minds on things above, the just, the pure, the lovely things, etc., I do not believe that this necessitates segregating things like art, music, poetry into Christian and non-Christian categories anymore than it makes sense to try to classify chickens and cars as Christian and non-Christian. Granted, chickens and cars don't "say" things like art, music, poetry and movies, but bear with me. Art is good, or art is bad; it speaks truth, or it does not; it is beautiful, or it is ugly. It isn't "Christian" or "not-Christian." Only a person can be a Christian or not a Christian. At one time, CCM was an embattled voice trying to be heard above the din, trying to have its viewpoint taken seriously in the marketplace of ideas. Somewhere along the line, it became an excuse to feed dumbed-down drivel to the masses just like NSYNC does, just another segment of the market. Christendom, and particularly American Christendom does not need another excuse to stop thinking, stop working to understand, stop interacting with the very difficult, tough, dirty, filthy, different (or any other adjective) ideas that are flowing around out there. We do not need to be further encouraged to turn inward. We need to turn outward, and yes, sometimes people who are not Christian say and do very true, beautiful, right things. In the same way, sometimes people who are Christian do very untrue, ugly, wrong, insipid, boring things. And vice versa.

K9, yes we do indeed agree. I wonder sometimes how many people are kept away from being openly pro-life by the pro-life advocates themselves. Hey, same thing goes for Christianity, now that I think about it!

Hi all. (I do lurk around, but the time to jump in is so limited it takes something like this to force my hand!)
K9, I understand what you're saying, but can't we agree that people would choose to get abortions whether they were sanctioned by law or not? Then why should that be legal when people can still choose to break the law? We certainly can't legislate the ability to choose to do wrong, but we can surely make something illegal. Murder is illegal -- should we legalize it simply because people can choose to murder? I don't know if this is your argument per se, or if you're just trying to explain the position of those who are pro-choice.
I can choose to do anything I want, regardless of any law on the books. The law says I can't steal, I can choose to steal. The law says I can't have sex with children, I can choose to have sex with children. The law says a lot of things -- all of which I can choose to do regardless of what the law says. On that basis would Bruce Cockburn say we should then do away with laws? I'm guessing no: he probably sees abortion as the lesser of two evils -- preventing bringing children who are unwanted or unloved into the world, and furthering the (supposed) burden on our planet's resources. (Either that or he doesn't believe these unborn babies are actually babies, which I doubt.) That's very pragmatic, but is it right?

Sounds great on paper, until someone chooses to kill you. Would you really want to legislate someone's moral right to choose to kill you? Yeah, I didn't think so. My moral freedom to choose to do something really bad is one thing: passing and defending a law that helps me to do something really bad is something else entirely. Either you think unborn babies are living human beings that are killed when they're aborted, or you think they're mindless/spiritless globs of goop that are no different than a kidney. And frankly, if you believe the latter you need to catch up on your Discovery channel viewing. And this is all before even thinking of bringing God and any kind of moral responsibility into the picture. Sorry, but attempts to reconcile any kind of pro-choice ethic with Christianity are just bullgrey poop'on plain and simple.
Oh, not that whoever did the Bruce Cockburn site thing isn't a sick bastard. I'm convinced the reason the country isn't overwhelmingly pro-life is because of the rampant, embarrassing stupidity run amuck among pro-lifers.
