I wanted a career in music, but sometimes I think it was a good thing I didn't get that. I know more than a few people who don't really seem to like music anymore because of the career drama that comes with making a living in an art.

That's an album I don't have. Was it only on M8, or was there another release?

This was a bit of a trip down memory lane. I had forgotten that Little Red Riding Hood got the M8 "treatment" as well. Nice to have the recent reissue instead.

We’ve kind of been going in order for the reissues - although a couple were done out of sequence.

Thanks for the update, Eric. I'm glad to have been wrong.

You're welcome. Smile

I can't speak for the band, obviously, but I recall a comment from Terry Scott Taylor (I think) suggesting that it was a bit artsy. Given the change in direction with the next album, DFBB, I can believe it. I can even understand it; sometimes you get tired of going in the direction you're going.

I can also understand prioritizing Horrendous Disc. I never owned that one either until the deluxe edition came out. I had only heard it once before in my life when I met a girl in college who had it on LP. I had heard the demo stuff that was included with the Daniel Amos deluxe set a lot more than that!

Greetings, K4DA, and welcome to the DAMb!

Unfortunately, there is no deluxe edition of Fearful Symmetry, and I haven't heard of any plans to produce one. There doesn't seem to be any interest from the band in revisiting it. I sympathize with you on the lack; that cassette often lived in my boombox during college. I would also love to read an included essay from Terry Scott Taylor on Walter de la Mare. Alas, it seems that time has slipped away.

By the way, as you appreciate the deluxe releases, do you have the bookset of Songs of the Heart? It is titled When Everyone Wore Hats and is well worth picking up for the extra discs and the small book they come in. You can pick it up here on the site's store.

Sadly, this now seems to be a Chinese gaming site or something. I should probably run my antivirus program now.

Thanks, Ron E. For some reason I always forget about Bandcamp. Probably best for my wallet, but I'll make a point of getting this one.

Well, I hadn't noticed, but that may be because I've never gotten this on CD, which I regret. Even if it is inferior to the cassette, like the CD release of Briefing for the Ascent, it would still be nice to be able to listen to the songs.

Listening to "Stone Away" this evening, I really miss Tim Chandler. To call him a genius is to sell him short. I could live a hundred lifetimes and not understand how to construct a bass line like that.

It half makes me want to get my Guild B10 out of the closet and half sell it and forget the whole thing.

Thanks, sondance. I've always be terrible about identifying voices on DA records. I think it was 25 years after the fact that I found out Jerry sang "Little Crosses" on Doppelganger, my first DA album.

Steve did have a lovely voice. Our loss is Heaven's gain.

I believe he sings lead on "Love in a Yielded Heart." He may also sing lead on "The Bible," but I'm less sure about that; he wrote it, so it's probably him. Both are on the band's first album.

From the 1994 Terry interviews on this site:
quote:
I don't know much about Bakersfield. Part of the song is based on my own personal experience -- that was the death of my grandfather. Bakersfield was where we had to go and see him in the hospital. That song was written out of the experience of going to that particular city; my feelings towards the town were definitely colored by that sense of impending death. It could have really been any city.

(different interview)
My grandfather died in Bakersfield. We would have to travel off to Bakersfield to see him in the hospital in one of the bleakest towns on the face of the earth. He had always been a strong man, central in my life, and someone I deeply admired. To see him in that hospital, shut down the way he was, was very disturbing.... The references to (sportscaster Vin) Scully are there because my grandfather was the guy who always had Vin Scully on the radio in his garage when I was a kid...

Once I'd read the above, the song's rage made sense to me. (As did the references to "Scully." At the time BL came out, the name "Scully" was mainly associated with The X-Files, so its use in this song really confused me!)

For me, "Bakersfield" is the standout track on this album. It does ring true for me.

I spent Summer 1987 in Bakersfield. It really was a desolate patch of sun-blasted hardpan full of Okies and fundamentalists. I was there as a summer missionary with the Baptist Student Union, and one pastor I spent a week working with kept trying to convert me from the error of Presbyterianism. It was in many ways a thirsty, soul-crushing place. Or maybe that was just me. I think TST acknowledges how a place can meld with our personal experiences with "God is with them, but I won't be there."

All that said, I would go back to Bakersfield. I met some good people there. I was going through my old photos yesterday and remembering them. Yeah, I might go back if I thought I could say hello the those pleasant few.
