I just want to say that Kalhoun is a brilliant freakin' album. Dusted this one off today and was blown away all over again. It's always been one of my favorites, but I'd forgotten just how great it really is. Gloryhound is just sublime. That tune sounds like DA meets Some Girls-era Rolling Stones. Awesome.

Show some love for Kalhoun, people!

I loved it before TST ever even wrote it! Tongue

...and I also had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad would kill us, and dance about on our graves singing "Hallelujah."

I think you can make a case that K is their best album. Even better than Mr. B.

Don't get me wrong, Kalhoun is a great album, but Mr. B seems so much more like a fleshed-out overview of the band and what it can do whereas this one feels like the dawn of the grunge era, specifically in "Kalhoun", "Father Explains" and "Virgin Falls". It's not as grungy and gut-level as "Bibleland" mind you (I call it the angry DA album) but you feel that aggression coming in pretty strongly.

I find it important to note that "Father Explains" was a reaction to the first Iraq war and almost seems tame in contrast to our current quagmire. Not to get all political (since that kind of tack belongs in the political debate thread), but I wonder how Terry would have approached the song if he knew what Bush 43 would be doing a decade later and on.

One of the things I think is cool about Kalhoun is how they'd change the chords sometimes on the second or third pass of the verse or chorus. They do this in Gloryhound and Gate of the World. Don't know if this was intentional or if they were still learning the songs as they recorded, but I think it sounds very cool.

By the way, how freakin' cool is Gate of the World! I love this album!

I remember my excitement when I heard that Kalhoun was coming out....the long lost return OF THE BAND!!!!

It didn't disappoint, either. Great album.

I came in on Kalhoun late

I love the less toted numbers like
Sweet Interior- and Virgin Falls
and Gate of the World is one of terrys most underrated songs about Eternity.

I can't compare it to MBD- to me Kalhoun is more of a concept recording- and MBD has way to much to be strictly limited to one theme (though parts of it are obvious.)

Kalhoun was my first DA album (I started off with Swirling Eddies, interestingly). Big Warm Sweet... and Gloryhound are honestly, truly, in my top 10.

The crunchy (and slide) guitar, falsetto vocals, and drums on Gloryhound are indeed sublime.

Just listened to DFBB again (transferring from cassette). IMHO nothing else they have done really matches it. It is simply their best. Although if I had to pick 1 DA song as a favorite, I'm not sure if it would come off this one or not.

DFBB was ground breaking and if DA ever gets any justice some music historian will give them there due!
