There are so many places DA could put songs. I would be willing to bet that fans would come out of it Tongue

Yeah, we've had some folks suggest this every now and
then.. it'd be nice, but the problem we run into is part of
the same problem we have with reissuing things. We have
to work out some kind of deal with the owner of the
music to put it up for download - if we can get that deal, we'd
almost rather just put it out on CD. I mean, if KMG let us do
something with Darn Floor... we'd almost rather just put out a
good collectors anniversary edition CD with nice liner notes,
photos and bonus tracks.

As much as I hate to admit it, this is the way the industry is going. We are going to see more and more people buying singles as opposed to complete CD's. I wish this wasn't the case but I think it is a sign of our times.

You are probably right sprinkler. It is unfortunate indeed.

This would be a great idea. It sure would reach more people than a new cd.

Yeah don't mis-interperet what we mean, the owners of
the albums will let you reissue things for a price. They
made an investment in owning them and they want return
for that investment. They also have authority to limit
how the album can be reissued even if you do pay the fee.

According to JT, when we did the Alarma Bookset the owner
of Fearful Symmetry had the stipulation that if we reissued
it at that time that it not be on a single CD by itself. That way
they still could later reissue it in that format if they choose, they
were protecting the investment they made.

So the problem with some reissues is twofold, it can be
more expensive than what you would make off the reissue
to reissue it, especially if the market has been eroded. And
even if it's not too expensive they might limit how you can
format the reissue as to not diminish the value of what they own.

And truthfully, the artwork for DA albums is a large part of
the concept. Reissues without a good representation of the
album artwork is contrary to the concept originally intended.

The whole itunes idea is not a bad one, it's just finding the
best way to utilize that idea under the constraints. Maybe
certain songs could be put on there or maybe record tracks
specifically for it, or maybe a few tracks from albums Terry
does own. It's just not as easy as 'lets just put everything
up there'.

The idea for a indipendant band also might not be as
spectacular as it is for a big well known group. Take the
whole MP3.com idea, they put a bunch of MP3s up there
and it was supposed to pay the band for each download.
(Some found ways around it and posted to the DADL
so that people could download in a way where the band got
nothing.) But generally even from the people that did use the site
correctly, not much money was brought in. If we had put up
entire albums we would of eroded the CD sales here
even if slightly. But the amount of money the CD sales brings
in is far greater than MP3.com ever was. So really with itunes
we would need to test it, find something that would be possible to
put up and see if it brings in more than what we would get out
of printing the CD and selling it here. If it was anything like
MP3.com it would not be a good trade off to put them up
and erode the sales here, or even the future potential sales
of a reissue. To really do well in that arena, you need lots
and lots of people downloading.

I guess to put it in a nutshell, DA's market is small. They have
to maximize the money brought in by releases by releasing them
under the constraints of what brings in the most money.
They really don't have the luxury of a real big name band
who sells tons of CDs through stores, their sites, itunes, and
anywhere else they can get their songs. What the market and
the internet has done to a lot of these smaller indipendant bands
is sort of a real puzzle.

Add to that, that Terry and the band do not plan their albums
around what they think will sell, but instead follow their creative
inspiration and the puzzle becomes even a more complex one.

Yeah thats something that might be a good test. Or maybe
even an unreleased song from something. There might be
ways to use itunes even beyond the regular albums if we
couldn't get permission. We really are not against the idea,
it's just we know how unfortunately complicated things get
when other people own stuff.

I wondered why that was... that makes sense... too bad Vox Humana had to pay the price on that one! Frown

I would like to see a decent re-issue of that one! Smile )
