I've never really thought this one out...let's see...

The first time I can remember hearing the name "Daniel Amos" was on the Surfonic Water Revival album. I'd never heard of this band before, and being fourteen at the time, I bought the album because it featured songs by the OC Supertones, The Insyderz, Smalltown Poets, Plankeye, and All Star United (all of whom have more or less disbanded, sadly). I did enjoy DA's track on there, "Pay For Surf", since it's rather upbeat and catchy, although I didn't really get the lyrics (still not sure I do...). But, like I said, I'd never heard of the band, hadn't seen any album they'd released, and didn't really pursue it.

Again, being a teenager who was into Christian music in the late 90s, I was naturally a big fan of the T&N and BEC record labels, and I heard several Lost Dogs songs on samplers and compilations from those two companies after the Dogs sigend with BEC. I don't think I connected them with Daniel Amos, though, yet.

Fast foward to my freshman year of college (2002?), when I started getting into Steve Taylor (that's another story in and of itself). As I was reading up on Steve, I kept on seeing the Lost Dogs and their associated bands popping up. I then read about the Swirling Eddies song "Hide the Beer, The Pastor's Here." As this was exactly the type of humorous/sarcastic songwriting I like, I started trying to find Eddies albums. From there, it took a couple of years, but I finally got my first Daniel Amos album (Preachers From Out of Space) around December '05.

So, there's my great American novel about "How I Found the Eddies".

Way back in '76 I bought Daniel Amos before I ever heard it 'cause I thought from the cover they'd sound a bit like the Eagles. Anyway, I've bought pretty much 'everything DA' since then. Cool

I was at a record giveaway at Scripture Press in Wheaton, and it was live on the air for a local Christian radio station. We all put our names in a fishbowl for two drawings.

The first drawing was for Horrendous Disc, I won it. They put my name back in the bowl. The second was for five records, including Alarma. I won that too.

The radio guy (Jim McNichols, if anyone has heard him, fairly well known in radio at the time) got upset because everyone around was crying "Scam!". He told me not to win any more. Oh well.

So my first two I didn't even pay for.

HD was immediately accessible. Still love it to this day.

Alarma I loved just as much - it was way out there, fresh, and different. I couldn't put my finger on it at the time, but it was described later as having a "quirky flatness" to the sound.

I did struggle with the Ron Sider book (Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger) Terry was holding in his hand on the record. I understand and somewhat agreed with the book, but at the very same time my Econ prof was forcing this book down my throat, and he was quite the Christian Marxist. So my reaction at the time was pretty negative.

To this day I struggle with Ron Sider and what he represents. Yet God has opened my mind to a lot more on the compassionate side of life. And I partly have Terry and DA to thank for that.

I wasn't even born when DFBB came out Shocked

My dad had Shotgun Angel through Doppelganger on records, and he recommended them to me and I liked them, especially Doppelganger. Around that time he got MBD and I liked that too, and asked him if there was any more of this stuff around. I think at that point we also had a copy of Songs of the Heart and a casssette of DFBB. My dad thought DFBB was okay, and SOTH was insanity put on cd. Needless to say, I really liked them, especially DFBB, which is now my favorite, and I hunted down cassettes to fill in gaps in the collection. My favorites now are DFBB, Motor Cycle, Doppelganger, and MBD.

I was at a Jerusalem concert sometime around 1985 with Daniel Amos opening. I was totally into Jerusalem, but didn't know much about DA. My friend had the Shotgun Angel and Horrendous Disc records, but I hadn't paid much attention to them. I could kick myself now, because I pretty much missed most of that DA concert. It was shortly after that that I got into them. I made a new friend that was a fan and I got hooked as well. I bought all the records that had been released up until then. I remember sitting in my friends basement listening to the records and looking through the Rad Rockers mailorder catalogue to see what stuff we could order (besides TST related we ordered 77s/Choir/Adam Again etc...) My very first CD purchase was Let's Spin, before I even owned a CD player. I've bought every DA/Eddies/TST CD since, including Fearful Symmetry and DFBB. Been a long time fan...
