Terry still says he'd like to see another DA record.... I just think its impossible to know ahead of time how/when it could happen. Like Midget, its one of those things where everything has to align just right..

The budget is the biggest thing.. so, if you remove preorders as a possibility, it becomes even more difficult.

As much as I'd like to see another Dan Amos album, let's face it, we'll buy whatever Terry puts out. C'mon Unca' Terry, let us spend some money!

Just out of curiosity...could anyone give a ballpark figure for what a DA recording budget would cost? I mean, based on previous, recent albums...$10,000? $20,000.

I think probably $10,000 would be a good base number. Then it typically rises as things progress.. so much is dependent upon schedules and plane flights and all of that stuff.... the number could grow a lot or very little depending on how things turn out. Terry's always been good at being "creative" with making things work to keep the budget lower if necessary... piggie-backing studio dates, recording while the Dogs are in town for something else, etc.

Of course a big part of it is timing of the budget. If it was in place all at one time, it would probably end up costing less overall than if it was spread out over several years. That was one of the big handicaps with Midget.

Looking back on it, I'm not even really sure what the total final budget for Midget was. Its kind of hard to put a number on it without digging back through multiple years of accounting.

of course i wouldn't expect it until 3 or 4 years later......
as long as i had those expectations up front, i wouldn't get upset if it wasn't in my grubby little hands 6 months later.... Wink

Well, we downplayed the immediacy of the last one and it didn't work too well.

I think if we were to do anything like that again, we'd do like we had talked about a while back where instead of a preorder, the fan would be buying some special collection (a CD or DVD) and the money would go to the album. That way, folks would get something for their money immediately and it might prevent that worry that nothing would ever come of it. All we'd have to do is keep the cost of that item low enough (on our side) that a good amount was going towards the album project for each sale. We'd want it to be something cool of course, but the packaging would have to suffer a little.. something like a "fan club" release or "All Day Sing" style would work (the new jewel case version that is).

Maybe even make a "donate" option for folks that wanted to give more... maybe do something special for donations of a certain size or something.

I don't know.... there are no immediate plans of course. If it were to happen, we'd have to completely rethink how it was done.

Heck...let's just go ahead and make it official!!!!!!!!!! There's a new DA album in the works!!!!!!!!!!!! Smile
I'm totally in for a pre-order...especially if there are goodies attached to it like some kind of "fan-club-ish" release.

So can Mr. Amos high tail it into the studio by...say...the end of the week???

My idea for a "fan-club" thing would be a little Starter Set demo album, dig?

"The Midget, The Speck, and The Molecule," the most release from the Swirling Eddies. Long story, good album, pick it up in the DA webstore today.

Thats also why there was no date of completion expectation given upfront on "Midget" because the whole point was it would be finished when all the money was there no matter how long it took. We made the mistake of updating people as Terry actually worked on things off and on over the course of the few years it took. Next time, we should probably just not update anyone on anything, its just we felt people would want to know where the progress was. But people used those updates to create their own expectations of complettion times and then were disapointed when their own expectations were not met.

Not what Terry says... Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

I asked Terry at a show if there are any more DA albums forthcoming, and his words were, "DA will always be a band." I realize that's not a yes, but he followed it up with saying he is always open to opportunities to record with DA, and looks forward to making more music together.

All of this, of course, to say, "We''ll see." I remember when critics were saying Motorcyle was their swan song.

Here's a question for any of you that want to answer... I've been trying to rethink the whole "preorder" thing from another angle.

What is your initial reaction to the idea of instead of buying a preorder, you had the option to buy any number of say four special releases... fan clubish type rarities discs.. maybe a bootleg on DVD or two. Say they were priced in the $20 range. There would be no obligation to buy all of them (or any of them), but all of the money would be reserved for a new project, and this would be clearly indicated on the store page. I'm thinking of things like the Avocado Faultline-related disc we've been planning to do; maybe a Cornerstone show on DVD, etc

Do you think participation in something like this would only be of interest *if* you would also receive the finished new project down the road without an additional purchase? Would having to purchase the new project down the road make any of you less likely to participate than with a regular preorder?

Or... what if there was the option to help out in both ways? A regular preorder for the strong hearted; and these special CDs for the squeemish?

Well, I participated in the fundraising for The Lost Dogs project, although I'll still have to purchase it when it releases (spring?).

So yeah, I'd do this. I would probably do a regular pre-order as well, but like Joey I'd have no illusions as to timing. As far as when the title is actually ready, I like the idea of having a pre-order once the discs have been sent to manufacture, with an immediate digital download.

yes, that was a big part of what we were waiting for with the midget.... the final product... give me a digital download if i'd already paid for it, then i won't mind waiting another 6 months for the whole pretty little package...
but of course i would like that too.... Wink

Once its fully recorded, it usually doesn't take too much time to be in everyones hands. One exception is the Route 66 project - although they're probably weren't really done with it. I'm sure they've probably added to it since I've heard it.

Downloads for preorderers is kind of a hard thing to do considering the fact that some folks don't allow those kinds of downloads to be limited to fellow preorderers. Its also tough because Terry's been fairly reluctant to do many downloads at all, except in certain cases/situation.
