Shotgun Angel question Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

Man, it's been too long since I've been here... I wish I had the time to post here... I miss it...

But to get to the point, I've been wanting to get Shotgun Angel, and I'm wondering whether I should spend the extra dollars to get the original release on ebay. I've heard that the 25th anniversary one was (like LRRH) butchered by M8. So how bad is the 25th, and should I get the original? Any thoughts?

The new version is not as bad as the Lost Dogs release,
where the connected songs were seperated by few second gaps.
In Shotgun Angel there are little blips between some songs,
most noticable during the quite strings part of the second side.
The Bonus disc sounds bad as we were told that disc would be
mastered and it seems it wasn't. I purposely did nothing to the
second disc sonically since that promise was made, had I known
they were going to not do anything I would of had it cleaned up.
We had complaints about the second disc and a lot of people
telling us they could have done better or they had better copies
of the recording. Yeah we could have done better too, and if people
have better copies of stuff...let us know.

The Lost Dogs themselves told us not to sell the Riding Hood
reissue because it was so bad, after they and we found out about
the errors.

Get the M8 version... the gaps suck, but they are not that bad... really they are just gaps.

Well, it's like this... Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

Would I have preferred the whole Revelation suite to have flowed as it was supposed to? Sure. But I bought the M8 anyway and I deal with the problem because it doesn't affect the songs as they ae, and buying an overpriced original Maranatha "Shotgun Angel" from E-Bay gives nothing back to the band.

At least if you buy this version, you can enjoy the music AND support DA and DA related projects in the future.

Speaking of which, I got "When Everyone Wore Hats" yesterday. Yes, it is not a hardbound book like The Alarma Bookset but, you know what, that was four separate releases with a wealth of material to collect. "Songs Of The Heart" was a single album. Even so, it's a handsome paperback of the same length and width of the Alarma Bookset, has a second disc with a different take on the album, and a third disc with readings and new songs.

Is it worth your money if you already have "SOTH" on disc? I'd say so. It's a fascinating alternate look at the songs; kind of what Universal Music is doing pairing original releases of "The Who's Tommy", "Night & Day" by Joe Jackson and EJ's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" with second discs with demos, live versions and b-sides. This is an interesting revisiting of one of the band's least-understood offerings and, yeah, worth your money.

But you really should get "Shotgun Angel" through the site. It's just good for all involved.

I've been saying this about LRRH for 2 1/2 years, and people like dennis, let alone those schmucks from the DADL said I was crazy! So THERE. Tongue Big Grin

That said, everything else above is accurate too, IMHO. If y'r a completist, go ahead and buy the M8 Shotgun Angel -- you won't listen to it more than a handful of times, the blips are noticeable but nowhere near as obnoxious as the gaps on LRRH, and the bonus tracks are pretty good (although the bonus interview disk, as alluded to above, is garbage both sonically and as an interview itself, but since you don't pay extra who cares?). If y'r replacing yr beloved copy, however, you'd be better off finding another version.

only the re-issue may be in doubt Roll Eyes

of course you could buy the m-8 version and then re-work it so the tracks don't have the gaps and then burn it to a CD-R so it plays all the way through like it's supposed to do..... or not.
