I got this this week and I have to say, this is some of Terry's most amazing songwriting EVER. Beautiful melodies, simple and straight forward lyrics, just one perfect song after another. It must be very difficult to write intelligent, non-embarassing praise music since so few accomplish it, but this is the stuff.

Anyway, it occurred to me, as a Dylan fan, that if Mr. B. is Terry's Blonde on Blonde, then NCT is his John Wesley Harding.

1. Gift Horse- Their most cohesive (except for maybe NCT) and the last with Gene...definite number 1.

2. GRS Part 1- The album that launched my journey into musical excellence (actually picked it up because I recognized Derri's name from COAH).

3. Real Men Cry- So simple, so beautiful, and their last album that rocked (except for the one song on Mutt).

4. Scenic Routes- Roots music heaven!

5. Nazarene Crying Towel- What can I say; not sure that I would actually argue with anyone putting this up higher on the list- it's a gem.

This is completely off the subject but Gift Horse would make a good name for a country band as well.

To me its hard to compare or make a list in the sense that
GRS and say NCT are so different. It's kinda like trying to compare
Alarma and Shotgun Angel. They both are a couple of my favorite
albums but for completely different reasons and completely
different moods.

I am kinda the same way with the Beatles....ask me which album is
their best....I like the White album for this list of reasons, I like
Rubber Soul for this list, I like Revolver for this list of reasons...
And Sgt Pepper...

It would be different if all the Lost Dogs albums were similar
stylistically, of course they are not, thats why none of us can agree
on which is their best.

I do like GH for the general sound of the album, it has a very rich
sound I like. I like NCT for some of the simplier kind of early CCM
style lyrics, they remind me of the songs in like the Son Worshippers
film. (CCM of say the early 70s.) I like the first couple Dogs albums
because each song was so different, they were like odd compilations
of songs that didnt fit in each of the guys respective bands.
GRS has some great songs on it as well, but it sticks out away
from the first two albums for some reason in my mind and I am
not really sure why...maybe a little rockier?

Yes I think with the SR the thought was "One off gospel record" and the Lost Dogs turned into this "good venue for all the songs that don't fit in with the band I play/write for." It became a band that always tried to make "The White Album."

Gh is a result of the other member not have the time or whatever else it took to write as much with the other three records. In short it became another one of Terry's Bands. Then in recent years after Gene died, the other dogs starting taking this band with a more "serious" approach.

I am not too crazy about the overall sound of "Gift Horse." It is too homogenized. Same reason I a don't care for RMC. But they both have some great songs on them. Free drinks, Lovely Man, In the Distance, etc...

I do really like the early to mid 70's vibe of NCT. I just miss the weird/rockin'/silly songs mixed in with the serious songs.

I miss The White Album.

Dennis, I agree except that I do like that weird sound GH has.

I remember before DA made Mr Buechners Dream, Tim had asked
the DaDL for suggestions or whatever. Some people wanted
another Darn Floor, or Shotgun Angel, or Vox Humana, or whatever
I know our suggestion was variety. We gave the example of
the White Album, it has Rocky Racoon, Helter Skelter, and
Wild Honey Pie on it. Each song was crafted in such a way that
it was unique, if they made sort of a country sounding song,
they made it really sound country. If they made a hard song, they
made it really hard...almost it seems they didn't worry about how
well they would all fit together. Just make each song strong.

Thats one reason I think the Beatles were so popular, they pleased
a lot of people by going in every direction. This person likes their
love songs, this one likes their hard songs, this one likes their weird
songs, etc. So make that weird song as good as you can, make that
love song as good as you can....and you impress both people.
Not to mention the rivalry between John and Paul on writing, they
would try to beat each other with better and better songs.

I see Buechners Dream as DA's White Album kinda, double album
a lot of different styles in there. When Tim first played us a CDR of
the album in Nashville, I remember the songs were in a different
order...and it seemed like most the hard songs were on the second
disc at the time. Which reminded me even more of the White Album.

There is also a different mentality I think that the Beatles had in the
sense that they didn't really set out to make an album. They just
worked on songs all the time, then when it came time for an album
they would kinda gather up all the songs they happened to be finished
with and made an album out of them. Some of the songs could be
years old, some new. Example "The One After 909" was written
in like '60 but didn't come out on an album until Let It Be.

I think a couple of the first Lost Dogs albums had that going for
them...each member bringing with them older songs they had
never or rarely used...so you had that compilation feel. Each song
had possibly years of work or thought. Example of course is
"Smokescreen." Some of the songs might of been new but not all.

Some of the later Dogs albums were more 'lets see what we can
come up with now,' it seems. Which is not entirely bad, the first
couple albums being compilatory in nature didn't really lend
themselves to being cohesive as a band created album. But the
band after having toured and worked together were later better
equiped to write songs and work together creating something
new. For example a couple songs on NCT actually are co-written
Mike and Terry numbers which is new.
