It was a long time before I knew that there is an airport in Orange County named after John Wayne, with a big bronze statue no less.

TST's Bandcamp 07-21-2022 09:43 Forum: General Discussion

It seems that a lot of things have been added to TST's Bandcamp page over the past couple of months. This morning I got notices for the "Daniel Amos [Deluxe] Disc 1, 35th Anniversary Two-Disc Deluxe Edition" and the "Instruction Through Film Limited Edition DVD". It looks like they are in the process of slowly adding everything he has done over his career, so it looks like a good place to keep tabs on.

I wondered "How did I miss this thread" until I noticed the date on the next to last post.

Sanctuary is up there for me; it's really hard for me to choose.

AGT has something there with "Stone Away." It really opens the album up right at the end.
"Ghost of the Heart" and "Hollow Man (Reprise)" were favorites when I was younger.
"Soon" is the only DA song to make me cry the first time I heard it.

But I think for me, the answer may be "The Sun Shines on Everyone" (though in fairness it wasn't released when this thread was made). If one only considers albums made under the "Daniel Amos" moniker (DA, da included), it strikes me because the message of the song marks quite a journey from "Jesus is Jehovah to Me", not to mention "Skeptic's Song." It makes quite a capstone on what is likely the end of the road for DA proper.

A fine write-up there. While I too did not initially like Briefing as well as K&I, I liked it well enough, and it has grown on me over the years. "Changeless" and "Capture Me" were immediately songs that I really liked, though.

The prayer Terry prays is by Cardinal John Henry Newman.

The choir at the end is the Montebello First Baptist Church Choir. I have always assumed that was TST's grandmother's church, but I don't know for sure.

A quick fact about "Goin' Home": The tune is the Largo theme from the 2nd movement of Antonin Dvorak's New World Symphony. He was a Bohemian composer who toured America in the late 19th century, during which he wrote the symphony. The theme is his original, but he intended it to sound like a spiritual.

Strangely, I don't see Briefing... on Bandcamp at all.

Edit: there's a third disc in the Doppelganger collector's edition!?!

Thanks for the explanation! Now I need to dig out my cassette. I know it has the "footsteps and 'Part 4: The Ascent'" part, but I don't remember if it has all the rest.

Then I need to buy a cassette player. Roll Eyes

I can't get to my cassette copy at the moment; it's in the back of the closet shelf. But discogs lists the time as 2:59 for that version. On the other hand, it lists 2:59 for all versions. I remember all the words from the lyrics on the site here, so I'm not sure what may have been cut.

Can you tell what makes up the additional 1'25"?

My CD version (1993, Frontline) has the whole 2:59. The final verse and chorus start at 1:40, which would have DwDunphy's version only 1:19, or 1:34 if they included the instrumental music from the beginning of the song. Seems extreme to cut it short like that. Confused

Things have been tough lately. Also, I've been reading Richard Rohr's The Universal Christ.

I was listening to to "Banquet at the World's End" just now. When I heard Tim's bass at the end of the instrumental break, I broke down crying.

I believe I will one day see him, finally, at last, to thank him face to face.

Oh, don't apologize, Wayne. I like learning things like that. After all, you are a teacher!

My problem with my name in school was convincing some teachers, who refused to use nicknames, that my name is really Jimmy, not James. Roll Eyes

My friend and I listened to Outdoor Elvis a number of times sitting out at the Christmas tree farm. Cool

Is "relief teaching" teaching a class while the regular teacher is absent? It has a nice ring to it compared to "substitute teaching."

Love to hear your December 1989 memory, Jimmy. I have one too, but you first!

The college I went to in the '80s was still on the quarter system. It also started Fall quarter early enough that we were finished by Thanksgiving and came back in January. I was supposed to finish up Spring '89, but due to a mix-up by my advisor, I had to go an extra quarter, Fall '89. So I got my first off-campus apartment, hoping I could find a job after the quarter ended.

I had a good friend that I frequently did things with. She didn't even seem to mind when I would hang around her dorm room/on-campus apartment. It seems strange now, thinking how popular she was with all the guys--especially the Christian guys, who all knew they had met God's intended for them. But she and I just did stuff as friends.

As the quarter came to an end, I managed to find a stop-gap job at a Christmas tree farm owned by a member of my church. My friend, who is from Maryland, told me that she needed to stay in Georgia over the break for something having to do with financial aid. I talked to my employer, and my friend was hired. She was able to stay in her apartment on campus.

When the break came, everybody we knew cleared out from college. It was basically just the two of us in town. We sat in the cold in a field of 5-8 ft. trees during the weekdays and found stuff to do together most of the rest of the time. It was like a moment out of time, intensely spent with one of my favorite people in the world.

Christmas came. I didn't find a job and had to move. Life happened and we lost touch. But in my memory there is still this moment suspended in time.
