It's pretty crazy what these guys charge. We brought in a speaker (1 guy, minimal props) for a 1-hour session, and he charges $5500 for that, but he cut it down to $3500. I can pay a few hundred bucks and have Mike Roe play in my living room, and have several times. Worth every penny, and I'm actually seeing someone who has honed a talent and skill. I echo what has been said here: they charge what the market will bear, and seem to be leaving the concept of ministry by the wayside, even as they tout their music or speaking as ministry of some kind.

I won't make it this year, sadly, but with Over the Rhine and Bill Mallonee dropping out, there are two acts right there that might have pushed me over the edge to attending. C-Stone was a great experience when I've attended, and even though it has changed, it was still a great catch-all for bands you never see, and certainly never see in one place. That said, you'd think since they've been doing it this long, they could have pulled it together and gotten a clue about who their core audience were/are. The average C-Stone ticket buyer probably wasn't going for Toby Mac.

I like the older bands and the newer bands (really dug Flatfoot 56 the last time I was there), and really enjoyed that cross section.

The subtitle of John Wayne was "Orange Grotesque, vol. 1" or something like that. Was there ever going to be a volume 2, and if so, what would it have encompassed?

I didn't realize there were so many board members at this show, or I would have said "hi" to you all. Was the guitar problem during "New Car"? It was funny. I think he may have played the last note of the song. Some observations:

--Paul certainly adds to the mix vocally. I would characterize his stage presence as frenetic, when compared to the others.

--I would say that turnout for a show like this in Nashville was actually decent in light of how apathetic people are for a lot of shows.

--I have to say that I've never heard Terry sound this good. Not that he ever sounds bad, but he seemed a little reinvigorated. You could definitely tell he was happy that DA is playing again.

--I'm glad they have the twin lead attack of Jerry and Greg. That's probably my favorite lineup of the band.

Not to get too dramatic, but the show reminded me of the history of these guys and the treasure of what this band, and the other Dogs-related bands, have accomplished. Back catalogs of consistently good-to-great music over a period of decades. My only complaint (and it's small one) is that there wasn't much music product. There was, however, posters, shirts and towels(!).

any chance of a show being recorded, seems like it could pay for itself... maybe?

Boy, I hope so. I hope at least one of the venues has decent A/V recording equipment, and something leaks out, or, even better, we get an official release.

How did DFBB do, sales-wise? I'm guessing that there would have been more reissues from Arena Rock if it had performed as well as they thought. But, that doesn't mean it didn't sell.

I asked for two reasons:

I like to know what I'm buying. I've had CD-R's do some strange things, as I'm sure anybody who has a lot them has seen. I've had layers separate, the reflective surface peel, etc. Of course, now I just rip 'em to a hard drive, so it doesn't matter much, but I still like to know.

I'm always interested in how other bands are pressing small runs (which was going to be my next question) because, being a musician, I may have a need for it sometime in the future. Does this mean that there isn't a glass master for pressing, or is it some kind of in between thing? I'd be interested in a link or more info if you can get it.

Not trying to be a jerk here. Just want to know whether or not they are pressed, silver CD's, or CD-R's. Is there a reason why you're not specifically saying? I have no issue with supporting Terry, I just want to know what I'm going to get if I order it.

I'm considering selling my 7's/Dogs/DA stuff. Some of it somewhat rare, some not. I'd rather sell it to people who are fans who I've talked to on here. I'm not sure what it's all worth. Here's the list:

Basically, I still love the artists but need the money. And, I gave away my 1-2-3 set earlier this year to a fan (because I'm just that nice Tongue ), along with all of my other CD's that I sold. As far as condition, if you're interested in anything in particular, PM me. I can tell you that many of the CD's have been played and played, and have some scratches. But some, like "It's For You", or the 7's DVD, for example, are in great shape.

Biblically, the church is a priesthood of all believers, so it doesn't matter if the pastor interacts with all the members. Technically, we're all ministers, ministering to each other. I know many will disagree, but the idea of one guy being "the pastor" as we know it today isn't found in the early church. I argue with people about it all the time Tongue

As far as creating a cult of personality, I would agree. But this also happens in smaller churches. When people come for a certain preaching style, or a show instead of to gather together to worship God and be the church, that's where the problem lies, and it can happen in any church.

Most likely.

I'd like to see Jesus say he's got no use for somebody.

As for DTL, I didn't agree with everything in that issue, and I don't agree with the conclusions drawn by some of the artists, but I'll bet that those conclusions were wrestled with by those individuals, something missing from most knee-jerk reactions about the issue of Homosexuality and the body of Christ.

the attitude of the 3 musicians in the down the line article seemed to be "this is who and how God made me, gay...", not one of repentance...

It doesn't seem like they just decided that, though. How many of us are staying in some sin, and are either dismissing it or having the same attitude about it? What about things like gossip or slander? If you had a magazine highlight artists with those issues, and their acceptance of them in their lives, would most people even give a sh....oot?

You would not like "Sacred Cows". It's all covers, and goofy at that. I enjoy it, but it's not for everybody.

"Midget" is more like "Zoom Daddy". Less comedic subject matter. "Midget" is an excellent album, and if you buy expecting a great record, then you won't be disappointed. But, I would say that about ZD as well. Both are great records, but more serious over all than the first two SE albums.

"Atom Heart Mother" is a fave.

If I want some Floyd, I listen to this or "Animals", though I love it all, even the two albums without Waters.

Floyd is still a big deal. You can tell significant bands not only by their sales and popularity, but by their record contracts and the power the band wields. There's a reason why, usually, you don't see The Beatles or Pink Floyd in cut-out bins. From what I understand, the unsold records must be returned to their label. There aren't many acts that can stipulate something like this. See also the recent PF lawsuit about selling individual tracks. There's some power there for sure, as most bands wouldn't even dream about suing over something like this.

quote:
Love the weird album cuts and B sides of The Beatles.

"It's All Too Much", "Only a Northern Song" from the Yellow Submarine soundtrack.

"Old Brown Shoe" as the B-side to "The Ballad of John and Yoko"

I have an affinity for George's songs, for sure.

And the mash-up of "Within You, Without You/Tomorrow Never Knows" from "Love".

I know some purists will balk, but I really dig that album, and the above track especially.

Also, no one's gonna be able to keep Burger on the set for more than 10 minutes unless they stock his trailer with Windex and wallpaper it with Randy "Macho Man" Savage posters!

Plus, I would say that "Scenic Routes" and "Little Red Riding Hood" are great hodgepodge records. And they're great records in general. LRRH is a classic record to me, one of those albums that holds together as a whole and has great individual songs. I love 'em all, but LRRH is the best, IMO.

I used to worry about reactions to things like this, but not any more. If the concept you're talking about is Biblical, and you're not doing something unbiblical to teach about it, then there's no problem. People will get offended, often over something that has nothing to do anything Biblical. When they do, they need to be rebuked.

BTW, I wondered what kind of response Terry would get at our church with this song. I knew most people wouldn't have any issue, but I was curious what people might say. Terry had a long introduction to the song, though, and it was made very clear what the song was about. Usually, when you clearly explain what's going on, there's no issue (usually). The problem comes when things are sometimes left to interpretation.

Saw the Terry Taylor tour last night in Rock Island, IL. Very good. Tonight, he'll be in Kewanee, IL, at my church. If you're even remotely in the area, stop in. It's FREE, and it starts at 7:30 pm.

The Rock Island show was excellent. The set list was the same as I've seen except for "Mall All Over the World", which was the opener.

Mall All Over the World

Angels Must Smile Like That

Andrew played bass for a little over half the set. He also played drums on "Ten Gallon Hat". Steve Hindalong came out at the end of the song to do his "rope trick", a twirling of the rope. Terry shared with the crowd that the impetus for Steve learning it was the Route 66 tour. There's a subplot in the footage from that tour were Steve is obsessed with Will Rogers, so much so that he eventually thinks he's Will Rogers.

Terry told a few stories: one about his dad before "Papa Danced on Olivera Street", a couple about Mike Roe, and a couple about touring. One had to do with an older gentleman who, at one DA concert, told him that he didn't agree at all with all the amplifiers and the like, that Jesus didn't have all those things in his day. Terry said he understood, but kept quiet otherwise. Then, the older man sat down to play an organ. The point being, of course, that those weren't around then either!

The new CD is a collection of the songs Terry is doing on tour, with three newly recorded acoustic versions of "Hide the Beer, the Pastor's Here", "Buffalo Hills" and "You Lay Down". I also bought the last copy he had of the DFBB reissue. I'm sure that's not the last copy period, just the last one that they have with them.

Looking forward to tonight's show, the last of the tour!

I didn't know about this until I looked at the Lost Dogs message board, so I figured there might be some more folks who have missed this.

There are two Route 66-related items available in the Lost Dogs store:

A download card with a code that will allow you to download three songs from the new record.

And this:
A collection of eight (Cool postcards featuring photos of the Lost Dogs taken by Jimmy Abegg on their recent Route 66 tour. Each photo represents one of eight states that the Dogs explored on their journey down the legendary Glory Road - Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Available while supplies last.

My question is: if I buy the eight postcards, is there a download code that comes with them as well? Or do I have to purchase both? I'm definitely going to buy the postcards either way. I'm pretty excited about the Route 66 release, and got to see them twice on that tour.

I was thinking this way as well. I don't know that there are that many new/casual fans of DA when compared to those who would buy deluxe sets.

Perhaps downloads would be the way to sell something to new listeners.

I'm buying new music on either vinyl or download. If neither is available, and it's something I want, I'll buy it on CD. But, going through my CD's recently (and seeing a lot of CD rot on discs that were over 10 years old), I'm not interested in it as a format any more. As far as downloads go, I back them up on an external hard drive.

For example, I haven't bought the DFBB reissue yet, but I did get the download via e-music. They, however, don't have the second disc (at least they didn't when I checked last). I will eventually get it on CD, but only because it's DA. I'd absolutely be thrilled to see DA downloads, and vinyl as well, although my guess is that I won't see that. But can you imagine MBD on a four or five record set? I can! Big Grin

I think fans understand why you guys put out what you do and in the format that you do, and usually will buy it.

As far as reissues go, I'll buy the deluxe editions, and single disc editions only if that's what is available. I currently don't have Shotgun Angel, The Alarma! Chronicles, DFBB, Kalhoun, Motorcycle, Bibleland, Let's Spin or Outdoor Elvis on CD (but I do have SA on vinyl, which I intend to ask Terry to sign when he comes to my church in August!)

With most new vinyl releases edging toward the $20 mark or more, you'd be able to charge a little more than for a CD, but would production costs and/or lack of market make it impossible to recoup costs and turn any kind of profit?

Since I'm not buying CD's for the most part any more (DA, 7's are one of the exceptions), DA vinyl releases would be something I'd buy, since I've been trying to track down 7's and DA vinyl for a little while now. Even 7 in. limited edition EP's with no printed sleeve would be cool, and save you money on production. What about an 7 in. EP of four live songs from Terry's tour? This I would buy! (But who else would? Confused )

If I had the money, I'd bid. I've always wanted an acoustic bass, and one played by the Dogs makes it even better.

BTW, initially it was said that they would all be playing Waterstone guitars. What happened to that? Were there more guitars? There is supposed to be another one listed, but I don't see it. I saw them twice for the Route 66 tour and didn't see anyone but Derri playing 'em.

How can anyone not love "Broken Ladders to Glory"? Big Grin

I bought this as a cut out at my local Christian Book store in '95 on cassette. Didn't care for it. Didn't listen to it for years until I got into DA about ten years later. Now I love it.

When my best friend, whose a Dogs/7's/Mike Roe/Choir fan, would go to Dogs shows, they've had DA CD's, and I'd always pass by 'em. Never bought a one. We loved the Eddies, though, so I'm not sure why. We groaned when we saw that GRS and Gift Horse had mostly Terry-penned songs on them. I think we liked the more dark tone of Mike's work, but honestly, I can't figure exactly why we didn't care for it.

Flash forward thirteen years, and I'm trying to get all the DA/TST stuff.

I really like the mini album version of CD's, because I love vinyl. I like CD's in this format better than any other. An Alarma Chronicles set like that would be excellent.

BTW, I have seen M8 discs with the M8 border all the way around. Whoever did their design stuff pretty much had no clue. See the design work on the LRRH reissue. Did they have any more fonts besides Arial and Times New Roman?

I guess vinyl is such a pain to ship internationally that Lo-Fidelity doesn't do it at all.

I can't imagine how long it takes for you guys to get the orders filled. As I was reading this thread, I was thinking about how long it takes me to send out the few trades that I mail. And that's just a handful every once in a while (I have four sitting, and they have been sitting for days, on my bookshelf at home, waiting to be mailed). As I was thinking about that, it gave me a new appreciation for your work.

It is a shame that there can't be more people in the fan base doing this work, but I can see some major problems with that. You have to trust people with money, customer info, etc., But I wonder if, at least on the mail end, you could have some people do the mailing of things. They'd have to have product at their house, be trustworthy, etc., but I wonder if that's possible.

I wait for DVD's and some CD's to end up in the discount or cut out bin. But usually it's stuff that I'm not so sure about, stuff that I want to hear, but not to invest in. For the casual fan, or someone who isn't in the fan base category of a band and/or actor or director, that makes sense to me.

I've also been guilty of asking about CD's or vinyl, but not buying it because I really wanted to know how much it was. A big part of my music buying is fact finding and price comparing. Not sure if that falls into your category or not, James. I do know that if I ask about a song or a disc, it doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to buy it. I want to know the price and see the packaging, etc., because it's all a part of the deal for me.

As far as MF goes, I think he's just being honest. It doesn't bother me. It's not how I view product that Terry makes (I've bought stuff with the express purpose of supporting his art/ministry), but I understand.

From the e-music website:

Full disclosure: I am not an objective reviewer — I am the Executive Producer/Project Co-Ordinator on this reissue. Here's why I thought this record was worth reissuing:

In 1989, I walked into a Christian record store in Sayville, New York with a clutch of used Stryper, Carman and Petra tapes and a mission to better myself musically. Having been raised in a religious family, my musical choices were limited to whatever arena rock pabulum was being foisted on me by various youth pastors and the occasional odd Smiths album I could sneak without my parents noticing. At a certain point I became convinced that there had to be religious music that didn't suck, and so my plan was to trade in my bad Jesus music for something a little more challenging.

The cassette I left with that day, Daniel Amos' Darn Floor — Big Bite was, from its first few notes, utterly baffling. A weird, jittery collection of nervous new wave, the album contained no huge hooks, no stacked-harmony choruses and — most notable to me at the time, no Capitalized Masculine Pronouns. A little digging gave me some backstory: Daniel Amos was a hugely popular Southern Gospel group in the late '70s, leading tent revival services for hippies who'd decided to follow Jesus — no turning back, no turning back. The band sold stacks and stacks of records and regularly packed out Southern California's Calvary Chapel, an honor Daniel Amos frontman Terry Taylor would later describe to me as "the equivalent of selling out Madison Square Garden every weekend for a month." Over time, though, they became disillusioned of the pat phrasings and turn-or-burn message being presented to new converts, and so they turned on a dime. In 1981, Daniel Amos released Alarma!, a strange, bleak record of angular post-punk that stunned their following and reduced their audience to the low triple digits. It's a bold instance of art-over-commerce if ever there was one, a band choosing to follow their muse rather than to follow the money.

The result, of course, is that Daniel Amos became even more marginalized. When Darn Floor — Big Bite was released in 1987 it sold 7,000 copies, a paltry number even by Christian music standards. It fell almost immediately out-of-print, with the few scant CD copies fetching in the low hundreds on eBay.

Three years ago, I got the wild idea that this record should be reissued. Not only is it one of my favorite records of all-time, it seemed aggravating to me that bands like Mission of Burma and the Germs and Nick Drake had the opportunity to have their catalogs reappraised but, because Daniel Amos existed on the fringes of the fringes, they were routinely ignored. The story of how Darn Floor — Big Bite went from a vault in Southern California to record stores and online retailers isn't all that interesting. What matters, as always, is the music. What stands out to me about Darn Floor, 21 years after its initial release, is what always stood out: how the music pulls off some weird hybrid of Robert Wyatt and Brian Wilson, matching weird, loopy verses with huge, aching choruses. "The Unattainable Earth" is dizzying and majestic, a single spiraling guitar line whirling over and over and over, spinning the song into a towering refrain. "Divine Instant" is like prototype Pixies, a glassy-eyed surf number interrupted by fits of electric guitar and hefting ominous lyrics like "I see the clock on the wall/ I see the skull beneath the skin." Two decades on, Darn Floor — Big Bite still sounds utterly bizarre, like some kind of warped Martian new wave.

What also stands out is the timelessness of topics: "Return of the Beat Menace" takes to task conservatives who use fear as a weapon, manipulating the flock into submission by railing against the menace of popular culture ("He's meeting all your strange requirements/ He thinks you can't be fooled/ He'll keep the rules and laws and sacraments/ By sending checks to you"). The title track compares a gorilla's attempt to describe an earthquake with man's inability to explain the unexplainable. "Pictures of the Gone World" is a cross-eyed lament for a slowly eroding environment. Needless to say, an audience buying Amy Grant's Lead Me On in mass quantities was not ready for a record that contained the lyrics, "We saw rouge and vermillion, we walked by the water."

Daniel Amos continued to make records through the '90s and up to the present day (their 2001 ELO-channeling double-album Mr. Buechner's Dream is as wondrous as anything they released in their prime). Their music doesn't require any level of faith to enjoy it (as this severely lapsed Christian can attest). All it takes is a bit of imagination and an appreciation for the strange, the daring and the creative. Darn Floor — Big Bite has all of those, and more, in spades.

Well, I think that there are many reasons that this would be a positive thing:

That kind of setting would play to Terry's strengths as storyteller and singer/songwriter.

It would be a new venture, because he's never toured solo before, thus possibly garnering more attention because there is a built-in angle of promotion.

Some shows could be recorded for an EP or full-length release (a la "It's For You"), which would provide a relatively inexpensive way to fund another studio project or just generate some income.

We would get to not only hear some great tunes, but the stories behind them.

Fans (like me) would love to hear solo acoustic arrangements of DA's back catalog tunes. Can you imagine some of the "Darn Floor, Big Bite" songs, for example, in this setting?

It's been a long time since Terry's toured with someone else besides the Lost Dogs. It's been a long time since we've heard him do his vast catalog of songs other than LD tunes. (Not complaining here, just commenting. I've loved all the LD shows I've seen.) For example, hearing "The Glory Road" on this last tour kind of made me think about how many great DA songs should be heard live again.

So, that's my case. Anyone else? Big Grin

The Cozy Dog "show" was great. My wife and I drove two hours to see the Dogs and eat some dogs (corn dogs, that is), and since she'd been there before, and told me it was great, we weren't going to miss it. I even got to play Mike's guitar while he ate lunch.

They filmed a couple of bits, interviewed a couple who had been married on Route 66 forty-some years ago, and, from what I could gather, spit on the founding of the interstate system Big Grin . They played four songs:

Tumblin' Tumbleweeds/Cool Water
The Glory Road
Devil's Elbow
The Cozy Dog Song

The last being written by Steve and Terry the night before as a jingle for the restaurant.

The vibe for this tour is really cool!

I've not seen or heard that, for the most part, as far as music goes. As a rule, in music, especially with smaller/indie labels, it implies that it's being manufactured. I'm sure that some do use it that way, but for music, it's not that common. For films, yes, all the time I see it. But unless DFBB is a feature film (which would, I'm sure, be cool!), I don't agree.

"Broken Ladders to Glory"=brilliant

There's no great bombastic chorus or hook in this tune, which, to me, matches the lyrical content, regarding our continual and consistent struggle with all things spiritual, but no great, single, overcoming success until we're in heaven. I love it when the music feels like the lyrics, if that makes sense.

quote:
It has "of all that aggression" coupled with the feeling of "never really getting out of neutral."

That's exactly what this song, musically and lyrically, sounds like to me. Which makes sense. That tension is what we experience until we are live with God eternally forever. Even the whole "Bibleland" concept is a pale comparison to what awaits, as we, and Paul says, "our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ" (Phil 3:20)

Pretty heady stuff for a Christian pop band!

Hey...

Got "Random Acts" at C-Stone. It's fun. Just wondering if there were any songs on the first pressing that are not on this one, and if so, why they weren't included.

Also, any chance "Ruckus at the Edge of Nowhere" will make an appearance in the store soon?

I'm really digging that I got to buy "Vox Humana". Now I've only got three Alarma Chronicles CD's left to get!

Definetly Dogs/VOL.

Thanks for the compliments.

Writing stuff really makes me appreciate good choruses in songs, which are always the hardest part for me. And it's funny that some really catchy choruses (like, for example, the song "Alarma") are really simple two or three note things. For me, HD and iAlarma! (from what I've heard of the last one, anyway) cemented Terry as a consistent songwriter. As much as I like "Daniel Amos" and SA (from, again, the couple of songs I've heard), when they started to rock, the songwriting got more original, too.

Just my two cents.

I do much of the time because it's only me playing everything, and sometimes I need it as a reference point.

But more and more, I'm not. I just play a drum track independent of anything else. I'm finding that, more and more, there's more feel to those tracks, and it's easier to sync up, because all of my musical quirks bleed into all the instruments I play. Tongue

I've never been in a band who recorded in a studio that used a click. Most drummers that I know hate 'em, and can't play with them anyway.

I'm a little sympathetic to autotune users. Here's why:

Last night, I was listening to a drum track I just recorded. There were a couple of spots where the timing was a little off, enough to be noticable. The rest of the track was great, and since I have limited recording time, and the track sounded really good (that's hard when you've got one Radio Shack mic on your whole kit), I edited it a little so that it sounds right.

Can I play the drums? Yes.
Could I have nailed it if I had spent more than 20 minutes on the whole drum track? Yes.

Most of my guitar, bass & keyboard tracks are one take. Drums and vocals are more, sometimes spliced together. But I played every bit of those drums, and sang every bit of those vocals. Just maybe not in the order that other people will hear them. Tongue

In a time when integrity seems to not be an issue for many people, I do expect the people on my CD's, mp3's, 8-tracks, etc., to actually be able to sing and play the way their performance sounds on the CD. If not, it's more or less lying.

I think if you're fixing something that you actually can do, but you're jusdt "autotuning" it to save time, why not.

If you can't sing, and you're being promoted as a singer, that's pretty much lying, and you should go sell encyclopedias.

I had a long post here, but I deleted it. It would have made this whole conversation more convoluted. Big Grin

So, here's a different long post! Pleased

A couple of things:
quote:
Thats feeding the incorrect stereotype that its only the big rich companies that are hurt.

Most artists do have less or almost nothing to lose because they make way less than their label's executives. That's why there is a stereotype, coupled with stories upon stories of artists getting screwed out of ownership of songs that they wrote, royalties from reissues, etc. A lot of people think those guys aren't seeing any of the money anyway, so they're really only stealing from "the man". I think that there is some truth to that because, again, a lot of artists really don't see serious money from their work. BTW, this opinion is based on talking to bands who were friends of mine, or friends of friends, who were signed to labels.

I think that illegal downloading (although this was not its original intent) should send a message that something is fundamentally wrong with the recording industry. If people see music as detached from its makers, and as mere product, that really is the industry's fault. They've propigated that culture ever since Col. Tom Parker licensed Elvis products in the 1950's. For engaged music fans, there is a lot of dislike for record executives.

In our culture, we've made bad behavior (executives cheating artists out of their money, charging high prices for CD's, putting out a substandard product on all levels) allowable simply because it was legal, because someone signed a contract. Now, we're making more bad behavior (downloading music) allowable, even if it is illegal, by and large as a reaction to initial bad behavior. It's a vicious circle.

If you guys (DA & the Townsends) can put together a CD bookset and sell it for $25, or a two disc reissue for $20, why can't big companies do it? They can, but they won't because they're greedy. Even Christians (and the Christian music industry) have allowed greed to be alright because it's not illegal. But that's not how it's supposed to work. Shame on us consumers for losing our idealism and our standards. With DA, I know where my money is going. It's a whole lot easier to plunk down cash for any of Terry's projects, even if I don't like every one of them (which I actually do!) It's a whole lot harder to plunk down cash for another compilation of Tom Petty's greatest hits that has one or two unreleased tracks so I can have those two unreleased tracks. To me, that's not dealing with the your fans with integrity. That kind of behavior is bound to breed resentment from music fans eventually, which it has, and they will probably find those two tracks on a music blog, for free, instead of buying the disc.

So, legal downloads should have been the answer. But, with DRM and an inflated cost per track (over a buck a piece), illegal downloading hasn't been relegated to history. On e-music, I can download 30 tracks (two-three CD's worth of music) for 10 bucks. I can print the packaging, unless there is special packaging with a CD, in which case I'll probably buy the physical CD. The point is that there are ways to handle this correctly, but the industry, for the most part, really has done not of it. There are exceptions (the aforementioned e-music, Rhino has some great, thorough reissues for a decent price) but come on! You only get shocked so many times before you don't go for the piece of cheese again!

quote:
The problem with this issue is that its not a "one-size-fits-all" problem.

I totally agree with this. It sucks that Terry (or Mike, or Mark's widow or whoever) suffers because of a corporate music culture that they did not create. And, really, I like the way you guys do what you do. I can talk to you. I can talk to Mike on the message board, meet him at shows, get his autograph on all of my 77's CD's, and the same is true for Terry (except the message board thing. When is he gonna get high-speed internet?!? Big Grin )

The way these guys do it, even if it is what they were almost forced to do, is way better than most artists. I see their music as important as really famous bands that I like, but I'll never get to meet thost bands, or see them for only $10. As hard as it is, yours is the model that should be the example that the industry should take note of.

Well...

I've got a Lost Dogs one, but it's a Mike Roe song.

It's "The New Physics".

There's suffering undeclared
There's suffering unawares
There's suffering everywhere

But it's not here
No it's not here
And if it's not here
Then is it anywhere?

It really reminds me that, in the kingdom, "out of sight" should not be "out of mind", and that there are plenty of people who don't know Jesus, who need a good meal, clean water and safe shelter. And, it reminds me that I'm called to do something about it.

As far as a Terry song, though, I've been thinking about my perspective, and how I look at things, and how some of it may be incorrect. That, of course, has been inspired by "It All Depends" from the new SE disc.

How do you know what is likely (or not) to be made available?

It would be a guess. But the less discussion there is about an album, or a reissue of an album, the more likely that it will remain out of print. Sure, anything is possible, but I think MF's view is right. I have bought a lot of music from free (and legal) downloads, and people playing me music. It's not quite the same, I know, because no one is "stealing" the music, and it's legal, but the point is that I like to hear new music. I wouldn't have been an Adam Again/77's fan if I had not heard (on cassette demos) "Dig" and "Pray Naked", respectively. For me, if someone gave me a download or a copy of something I liked, I'd buy it. If I didn't like it, I would not have bought it anyway.

I understand, though, that, in our culture, some people have an Ipod full of illegal music. I think, at this point, that the music industry is reaping what they've sown by making music mere product. It doesn't excuse the illegal stuff, I know, but it's how people see music now. It's very disposable, bland nonsense, so why should they pay for it?

I know that many music fans (myself included) are sick of buying albums only to find one or two good songs, fleshed out with 8 or 9 crappy ones so that the band could sell a full-length CD, and make more money. Coupled with bonus tracks sold at different stores, special edition reissues that have one new song on them, etc., it's no wonder that music consumers are fed up. One in particular, "Last Man Standing" by Jerry Lee Lewis comes to mind. To get all the songs from this album, I would have had to buy five copies at different stores to get all the bonus songs. Does that sound consumer-friendly to you?

A lot of hardcore fans are not going to wait until Lo-Fidelity or Arena Rock suddenly, out of the blue, reissues their favorite disc. This isn't a slam on those labels; they're great, excellent labels to be sure, but they are at the whim of those labels (KMG, for example) who own the rights to stuff that a Lo-Fi or Arena Rock would love to reissue. And, again, a lot of fans just aren't going to wait for years to hear it. But those same fans, I believe, will buy the reissue if/when it comes out. I believe it because I've seen music fans do it. And seeing is...well, you know.

The people here (fans of DA) have a vested interest in funding Terry's music. Anyone who spends any time on this board understands that, and most likely, if they share their music, are going to share LP rips or CD copies with people who are likely to buy a reissue of the same LP's.

Let me say here that I've made purchases from the webstore and at shows to support Terry and/or Mike Roe specifically, not because I simply wanted the product. For example, if Mike allows me to tape a show, and then releases the show on CD, I would still buy it. I wouldn't hesitate.

I think if a devoted fan (much like those who have posted in this thread) get a copy or a download of an OOP DA disc, they will most likely buy any reissue that comes out afterward. Technically, this is illegal, but so are mix tapes..er...CD's. The reason why most of us are okay with mix discs is that we think that no one's out any money, and we think that our favorite artist might actually make money because of it. If one of us (you know, us devotees) gets a download of something that is OOP, most likely, no one is out any money because we'll buy it when it gets reissued. To me, that is understandable.

For example, if Dennis has every DA disc but "Alarma", and happens along a download of "Alarma", knowing that when it is reissued (<HINT>in the boxset with extra live tracks, and hopefully soon</HINT> he will buy it, I don't really see a problem with that. The problem is that not everyone's that hardcore about it, I know. But they should be! Smile

BTW, do you really think that Randy is not trying to reissue "Between the Glory & The Flame" as some point? My guess is that, just like DA, he's trying on various levels to reissue everything in his back catalog. For those of you who get the LP rip, will you buy it when it comes out? My guess is you will, just because that's the kind of good people you are!

My guess is that some of you have "illegal" music in your collections, but that you also will not cheat the artist out of their rightful compensation when that illegal music is available legally.

Yeah, I know you can buy this stuff on e-bay, but these guys don't see a cent from that. If strict legality (spirit of the law vs. letter of the law) is the issue for you, then this is the way to go, certainly.

Let me say that, a little while ago, I bought a copy of "Mutt" from a Family Christian store for $1.49. Kind of made me a little sad.

quote:
It just baffles me.

Being a paid music minister, I'm glad people pay for music! I think it comes from Christians seeing music and art as superfluous and not a life's necessity. That comes from a segment of the Church that devalues art, and now has turned it into product. But, it wasn't always like that. Music was and is a big deal to God, so much so that some of the Levites lived in the temple, and played music full-time. That's all they did. You can see in the building of the temple that art was a big deal to God as well.

So, Jerry...

Well, I vote for me, MarkyMark. Terry needs to get in touch with the youth culture, and make music with a more hip-hop tinge. I can make that happen. I'll take time off of my movie career for Terry. And Terry needs more dancers in his videos. I didn't see one dancer in the DVD "Construction With Flem" or whatever that thing was called. That's why DA has never been as big as The Funky Bunch, and probably never will be, unless you let me produce your next record!!!!!! Big Grin

Seriously, though, I like the Jason Martin idea.

I certainly agree with that! I'm really looking forward to the "Darn Floor, Big Bite" and "HD" releases! It pains me to think that Terry would not receive compensation for his brilliant work; at the same time, I understand fans wanting to hear OOP stuff.

Is there a difference for some between sharing it amongst a small community (i.e., on this board) and just opening a download up for any and everyone? I'm curious to know what everyone thinks. The difference to me seems to be that, on this board, people would buy a reissue anyway, even if they could download it. But, that doesn't make it legal.

I have a few questions about the bookset WEWH:

1) Why an acoustic version of SOTH? Was it recorded as demo before the actual disc or way after specifically for the bookset?
2) Why were the three tracks left off?
3) Did SOTH sell so well that it warranted a second version, or was it a labor of love?
4) Do you have any other booksets that you might be considering?

I think that's it.

Well...

My opinion here doesn't probably factor here, but I'll take a stab.

First, I like this community and all the folks here.

Second, I think it's pretty obvious that the "bobd" thing is taking BD's side, and it is an intentional, albeit very minor, jab. I don't really have a problem with that, I suppose, but at least call it what it is. I know, you know him outside of this board, etc., but at least admit that that's what it is, or at least that's how it started.

Third, I don't think it's of any consequence. It seems like it's (the "bobd" signature) morphed into something else, where it's really not intended now to instigate, as much as it is a joke. I can understand that the Audioris might get a little stung when they see it, and other minor comments they see, but you've got to let it go.

The CD was late. It should not have been. However, it was not intentional.

People got a little nasty. They shouldn't have, but now, as far as I can tell, it's over.

Can't all you guys, and I mean all of you, let this thing go already?

If you post after this, saying that you have let it go, you really haven't!!!! Big Grin

Whether or not Terry was right or wrong, he really has the last laugh here. He admonished a group of people on a CD that has, at the very least, sold thousands of copies. I bet he has at least a little chuckle about that! Big Grin Now I'm trying to figure out how to get myself into a Terry Scott Taylor tune. Something like this, perhaps:

I looked through a window and I saw into heaven
(Sweet) MarkyMark77 in a stain-glass reflection
Out over the gate we saw angels in the garden
We're gazing at a distance at our own resurrection

or maybe this:

Put a lid on it baby
Zip it up, lose the key
Who invited you anyway?
It sure wasn't me
Your long stories are boring,
that jokes obnoxious at best
Put a lid on it MarkyMark77,
give your pie hole a rest

or maybe this:

i love the simple things you say
and you never seem to get in the way
no one is quite like you
compassionate and true
"just as i am", i say
i love you, MarkyMark77

I have Bibleland on tape. I didn't like it at first, which was pretty much how I felt about all DA until the last few years.

Insert your groan here.

I started with all these bands with "Pray Naked", and then "LRRH", both of which I wore out playing. When a friend and I went to see the Dogs in '96, they didn't have any CD's left at the merch table except DA, which my friend and I quickly refused. We also whined that there were too many "Terry" songs on Green Room Serenade. He, too, wasn't a DA fan. Still really isn't too much.

My, how things have changed. Now, my wife and I are trying to get everything that Terry's ever done. I still love the 7's and the Dogs, too, of course. "Horrendous Disc" is what changed my mind about the whole thing. I dug out my Bibleland tape a couple of years ago, after years of not touching it, and, wouldn't you know it, I love it.

Now if I could only get it (and the rest of the catalog) on CD...

When's that "Darn Floor" reissue coming out? Cool

It's really hard to believe the disconnect on all this stuff.

Any cursory read of the Psalms or Lamentations (or many of the prophets) deals with the real stuff of life. What about Hosea marrying a prositute? It can be in the Bible, but you probably dare not write a song about it, even though it's in the Bible! A lot of what Terry has written seems to mirror Old Testament prophets in their calling out of sin and stupidity.

The good news is that the uptight church has mellowed some on this nonsense. There are still big problems in regard to art in the church, and a lot of churches are actually doing art well, which is something that I wondered if I'd ever see.

The examples just in this thread show me an unfortunate pattern in the church that's been going on for centuries, probably since they (we) burned Gallileo. It seems that faith is enough, and all intelligent thought (scientific, artistic, etc.,) be darned. What's up with that? There is no critical thinking, logic or self scrutiny. Like I said, I think it's getting better. But thinking that "red horse" automatically means Satan? It seems that some people are just looking for bad because that has an air of holiness to it, like thinking that the more we reject, protest and complain, the more holy we are because we're pushing the world away from us. Blech!!!

A lot of it, I believe, it igorance of Scripture. It people really understood the full scope of God's word, really read it instead of regurgitating proof texts and snipets they heard from their pastor, a lot of what the church does would probably be repented of!!!!!!

It's sad because there really is only one type of Christian music radio format, which is basically Adult Contemporary. There is no classic rock format in the Christian world, and a lot of "classic" Christian rock would fit right in with secular classic rock radio, but it's either Christian or unknown to programmers, either way marking it unusable.

It seems some of our favorite music has been relegated to "hymn" status.

Would it really kill them to play a classic track a couple of times a day (Stonehill, Norman, 77's, DA, Keaggy), instead of playing Mark Harris yet again?!

Obviously, I don't know, but I'm assuming it was straight to DAT or MiniDisc from the board. I noticed the hard pan, too, but when it was announced, I assumed that it wasn't a multi-track recording, so I figured it would have some minor anomolies...

I noticed also that the delay on Mike's voice (especially on "Snowblind") echos left, then right, which is typical for a stereo effects processor, but then begs the question why, from the soundboard, wasn't the lead vocal dead center?

I don't really care or anything, just curious. It's a great release, with a great performance, by a great band!

When I first heard the Laramie performance (from this tour, I think), the first few songs have almost no vocal, but it really got me to listen to how tight the band was, and I think I enjoy it almost as much as anything I've heard from the 7's. But then, when the vocals are turned up for the house (Mike tells the soundman to do so), it's even better.

I know Mike tends to be critical of his performances, but, man they really kicked on this tour!

I think it would be a tough sell for an artist to revisit and/or redo something that they did 25+ years ago. Sure, bands do their hits, but are usually far more excited about what they are doing now. A "Daniel Amos"/"Shotgun Angel" lineup concert really would not interest me as much as a "Horrendous Disc" lineup concert, but then again, Terry has already done that, and now seems to be more interested in The Dogs or SE (comprised mostly of Dogs) than anything else.

1 Charvel electric w/ Floyd Rose tremelo

2) What Terry has played throughout the years, as well as the other members of DA. I'd be curious to see what guitars/basses/drums/keys that they played from the 1970's on!

I have an idea. You could do a pre-order! Big Grin

But, I am kind of serious on that. This is the case where a pre-order would work best, because the material is already "in the can", and because it's already recorded, you wouldn't have the problem that the new SE disc had. With the Townsends editing it for free or very little, and pre-order cash, you might be able to break even, which is probably your goal anyway. I say "bring back the pre-order". I would be willing to help do whatever it takes to get this out, because I've been waiting for it ever since I heard about it. Even just a live CD of this would be really cool!

Also, I second everything Phy said. And, maybe there are a handful of fans that could assist in some way, like a street team, or even some financial backing. I'm sure you've probably thought of most of this, but, hey, you never know!

BTW, Jeffery, thanks for all of your work. There are several releases that none of us would have if it weren't for you, and please know that all of your work (and, at times, loss of money) is greatly appreciated!

Still no "Midget" for me, either.

HD is incredible! If you like ELO songs like Telephone Line or Mr. Blue Sky you will absolutely love it.

Let me just share a bit about HD.

I never really cared too much for DA until the last year or so. My first two Christian groups I really liked were Adam Again and the 77's. Checking out Little Red Riding Hood, I say that Gene and Mike were in the Lost Dogs, so I bought it, and I was blown away by it. Consequently, I bought what I could by those bands, as well as the Choir.

As Lost Dogs concerts in the 90's, they always had Daniel Amos CD's, but I never bought one. When Green Room Serenade came out, I was disappointed that most of the songs were Terry's, because I loved Mike's and Gene's songwriting. I felt the same way about Gift Horse.

Then, Real Men Cry comes out, and I really dig the production. And everyone's talking about how Gift Horse is the best LD disc. So, I gave it another chance. Mike tends to be more introspective, I think, where Terry writes what I would call "big picture" lyrics.

Really long story a little shorter, I got married, my wife dug Gift Horse and Green Room Serenade, we played them a lot, and now I'm playing catch-up, buying DA stuff.

Now, on to Horrendous Disc.

I wasn't sure about buying it. I saw it at the local Christian book store a few months ago. I thought that I'd probably play it once or twice. This was not the case.

It deserves whatever praise it gets. It's classic rock meets new wave meets Jesus. And it's every bit as good as the best secular music that was coming out at the time.

And, it's one of two or three early DA CD's that you probably won't have to pay an arm and a leg for.

BTW, I feel the same way about Larry's "In Another Land" or whatever it's called.

Yeah, the humor colors the narrative, but is not the narrative. It's really more like ironical humor, where the life situation has a juxtaposition of something very different from the way it's supposed to be. Unlike Weird Al, where the humor itself is the point, Terry's songs are commentaries on the human condition, and the spiritual side of that condition, as opposed to just humor for humor's sake.

It's the difference between saying, "That cat is funny looking" and "I wonder why that cat is funny looking".

Terry Gilliam is my favorite director, BTW...

Anyway, at the C-Stone press conference, Terry mentioned LD, DA & the 77's in regard to the pick-it-yourself CD's (I think), and specifically said that the Choir was not participating in this. So, that's why I asked the question because, if they're doing DA stuff, maybe they're doing SE stuff, too!

What's really frustrating about CCM is that it is (no matter what the style) homogenized so it can be played on CCM radio. The market is such that (unlike secular music) there are not different formats in Christian radio. There is one format (maybe two) that all Christian radio follows. Very rarely do you ever get true folk, alt. country, rap, screamo, etc., on these stations. You only get homogenized, safe versions of these genres. CCM is really working against itself because most of those artists who are true to what they do seek secular labels out, and have great success, thereby bringing honest Christian music to the people who need it the most. Over The Rhine is just one example: they never could have released "Drunkard's Prayer" on any "Christian" label because of the title. They're better off on Backporch/Virgin, anyway, because they can sing what they want to sing, what God has probably made them to sing. I can't really stomach most of CCM because it doesn't usually deal with honest struggles of faith (which is what so much of this Christian life is) in a deeply intelligent way. All we seem to get are platitudes and a rehash of the same themes. It has me wishing that Terry, Mike and all of our favorites could get a secular label behind 'em. I'd like to see what might happen then...

BTW, Jan has a few free mp3's on her site if you want to check her music out...

Would there be any possible way to begin work on a detailed sessionography for Daniel Amos? There's already a basic sessionography in the history section, so maybe that would be a start.

I've seen Michael Pritzl do this. Say what you want about him, but I was pretty impressed when I witnessed this. And, conversely, the trading that occurs which our favorite bands allow is pretty ministry and message minded to me, too.

As far as CCM goes...
I don't have a problem with some of it, but a lot of it seems to be an adventure in missing the point. And besides Tooth and Nail/Solid State, most Christian labels don't push their bands in the secular market at the beginning of their career, which, in theory, might be a better way to do some outreach ministry. How about a Christian label that makes music for the secular market? It would have to be darn good and relevant. And that there is even a debate about the appropriateness of negative reviews gives you a clue at how the CCM industry and culture has propped up mediocrity.

And, finally, I think Terry might have been more well-known if he started secularly. But, maybe that wasn't what God had in mind.

Phew! I need a break, some lemonade and 4HIM on my stereo! Cool

Well.. Forum: General Discussion

I'm obviously not Terry, but I can't help but respond.

Being a pastor, I am overseen by a body of elders who keep me accountable, and, yes, judge my job performance. As a worship pastor, I have to make judgements all the time about who sings and plays what, and whether or not they are a fit, and can play or sing well enough so that the body of Christ will be edified through their ministry. We make these kinds of judgements all of the time. And if you're going to be in the public eye, you will be scrutinized. And why not? The quality of all of our work will be tested by fire someday (1 Corinthians 3:13). Having had some experience in the Christian music industry, I know that there isn't built-in accountablity for many artists. Critics aren't church elders or anything, but at least someone is keeping them accountable (and the labels, too!) for the product they make. And, being accountable to the body of Christ is a Biblical principle.

Also, people do judge your ministry if you're a musician by simply buying or not buying your music. Music is so subjective that I wonder why people get upset over someone offering their opinion of a recording. Why do they care so much? The Christian music bubble will never be burst and actually reach people with this kind of inbred musical culture.

So....
Imagine my surprise when I was leafing through some discs at my local Family Bookstore and found HD sealed. So, I purchased it. Some thoughts that have probably already been expressed several times:
1) The mastering is pretty good.
2) There's an awful lot of Larry on the booklet insert, and not a lot of DA.
3) No bonus tracks on a 2003 CD reissue?!?
4) Having not been really interested in early DA stuff until recently, I (and my wife) were surprised at how much we liked an early 80's album that we'd never heard before. Usually it's hard to get past the production for me, but she remarked that it reminded her of Talking Heads, which is a pretty big compliment coming from her. It's really pretty good stuff.

It made me make up my mind to buy other DA re-releases, too, which was something I was on the fence about.

This is what I say (so it must be important) Big Grin

Please do not re-issue the bookset. Just reissue each individual CD. Reissue them when you can with extras, etc. Reissue them as double discs if you have to much material for a single disc, but put the double discs in a single jewel case with a nice CD booklet. When all the rights are negotiated and every thing else is in place, do a pre-order two months before the release date for funding purposes. When you release a disc, do a download of it for everyone who pre-ordered. That way, if the manufacturing time runs over the release date, people can still access it. This way you're doing everything (almost) everybody wants. Kind of. Happy

Terry's letter is exactly what people need to understand.

quote:
We're trying to be very careful with this reissue series. We don't want to rush out an Alarma reprint and then decide that we need to do it differently when we get around to doing Fearful Symmetry. We'd like to do the definitive release of each album.. nothing that the band will have regrets about a year later or feel the need to reissue again at some point. Whatever we do for those two discs will have to be done for Vox and Fearful as well.. since they're a set.

I totally understand this, but I think there is room for everything. The projects that you continually do are of high quality and value. But for a more casual fan, they may just want a single disc "Alarma!" because they had the tape 15 years ago or something. It would be great if you could do downloads, keep in print what you own in a single disc fashion (even a CD-R thing, like some artists do), and also have special sets. That way there would be no wait for those who just want a CD legally, and more funding for the special stuff from downloads and CD-R's.

Just thinking out loud.

I'm sure it is frustrating. And what you said was exactly my point. Having some experience in the Christian music industry, I know how some of this stuff goes down. Like I said, I have no problem with everyone recouping their investment, making money, etc. But if a company allows a reissue by a label like Lo-Fidelity with certain constraints (pressing number, artwork or whatever) that is a better situation than just leaving the recordings in the vault. Would "Ten Songs" ever have seen a reissue if Lo-Fidelity had not taken the initiative? I would love to see a Christian music market where reissues of our beloved bands sell well - but, I don't think that will ever happen. I know what you're saying, and I know that's how it is, but Christian music industry thinking never did make much sense to me, even when I was semi-involved in it. We tend to allow bad behavior because it's business and not church. Would we say that these labels are good stewards of what God has given them? I don't know.

In the suggestion department, you could always do what artists do when they want to put a greatest hits record with songs they recorded on a different label: they re-record them. Of course, to most musicphiles this is the worst atrocity that can be committed. But, with DA at the peak of their performance abilities, why not have DA enter a studio and simply re-record every single album? Not only would you own all the recordings, but fans who have the old recordings would want the new ones to complete their collection. I SAY BRING ON THE RE-RECORDINGS!!!! Tongue

So...
The companies that own the masters to some of the DA albums won't allow (or put restrictions on) Terry reissuing his own work. Aside from the big issue of how the music industry screws artists out of various rights and royalties, I have to make the obvious observation: they are not doing anything with those masters. It's like KMG not allowing Jeffery K. to reissue "Ten Songs" for a long time. For what reason? Was KMG going to do a big rollout of the entire Adam Again catalog? Not bloody likely.

For the most part, these bands didn't sell Petra-sized amounts of product when they were new. (They should have sold millions, but that's not my point) They certainly aren't now. So, they're just going to let all of these master recordings rot while us fans wonder if we can make CD copies or downloads, and wait and wait and wait to be ministered to by some really great music. Did the greatest hits releases really do enough business to warrant exercising such narrow control over the albums? I understand the costs of publishing, manufacturing, etc. and I do not begrudge the labels get their cut. But now, it would seem like there is no cut to be had. The parable of the rich fool in Luke 12 comes to mind. You can store and store and store it up, but for what? All this "bread" (music) should be cast upon the water...

With the greatest hits packages of LD, DA & AA deleted (I'm assuming), there is no in-print back catalog product for any of these bands. Which, by the way, makes me appreciate how all of these bands operate, and the people (like the Audioris) who do all of this leg work to get the music out. Thank you guys.
