Uncle Stonehill's Hat review Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

Well, we got this thing today and I must admit I was a bit skeptical before ordering, after looking at the lyrics and seeing things some said (although others were quite complimentary). And I'm not too serious or uptight.

We have a 2 1/2 year old boy and a 5 1/2 year old girl. After really digging the Mouse Family Christmas CD the last couple of weeks, they got to hear this tonight. I kind of made a big deal about it being a surprise, which helped with getting quick baths and such. They thought it was great and our girl said after the first song, Uncle Stonehill's Hat, "this is better than the mouse CD!" This continued along with dancing and running around the living room and just generally being rambunctious for the duration, along with the "this is better" stuff. I can't recall seeing quite a reaction like this, even to some of the more popular stuff, like Veggie Tales or something. Simply awesome.

And it's not just silly, either. They both wanted to repeatedly hear "The Golden Door"/"Valley of the Echoes". After 2 or 3 times I finally realized our boy thought it said "Valley of the Backhoes". I guess that would be heaven to him. We also went back and listened to Snailvis' "Mister Snail" a couple of times and "Toes" as well. Our girl really liked the map and the concept of the doors opening and enjoyed following along.

It was a great conversation stimulator, making talking about some of the "important" things much easier. And it was a total blast, too. I can't say enough good about this one. Buy it for your kids, buy it for the grandkids, buy it for others' kids. How old is too old? I don't really know - maybe older elementary school for kids in general, although I think some could enjoy it much longer.

WOW! Cool Smile ) Pleased

edit: Oh, and I thought it was "Carmen mYlanta" until I looked closer and realized it said "Carmen Myanta". What else was I supposed to think, with a song on the same CD called "Beanies and Franks"? Big Grin Noelle's voice sounds really cool.

edit 2: I could just really KICK myself hard for not getting this much sooner. One true regret.

Cool post!

My son would have liked that valley too. i remember when we listened to it as a family for the first time. It was great fun. We lent it to some friends in Fresno, though, and never got it back.

Sounds like you need to send Snailvis down there to "slug" them and drag it back. Just be sure you send him on a yo-yo or it may take a few months (years?) for him to return. Big Grin

edit: There's enough room in your "house" for your friends to come visit, right? Big Grin

Yes, that's me boo-hoo-ing. I was not home tonight when they listened to it, so I missed this experience! Now all I get to do is read about it. Frown

Well, I guess I can't always be here, and I did need a chance to go out with a friend and just chill for a while. Smile

I'm listening to the CD now, but for some reason, it doesn't quite have the same kick that it would have had watching my children running around the room. Can't wait to listen to it with them! Smile ) Pleased Cool Big Grin

It's a fun CD.

I think we could do without another version of "Shut de door" though!

I agree wholeheartedly.

Although if you have some "cool" rebellious-type pre-teens to teens they may openly talk against it. But they would probably secretly treasure it if you played it anyway and got really crazy along with it! Big Grin

I bought Uncle Stonehill's Hat.

I thought it was fun and interesting, but I don't listen to it often. I tried to get my 6-year-old daughter to listen to it (actually I bought it for her), and she was just plain bored. (Although she did think for a long time afterwards that Elvis real name was "snailvis").

I'd have to say she enjoyed picking doors at the web site, she enjoyed the little mouse-over, mouse-not-over, mouse-over, mouse-not-over, thing with the slamming doors at the web site a great deal. ( http://www.unclestonehill.com/ ) But I just can't get her interested in listening to the CD.

Oh well.

She loves listening to classic Stonehill with me: in fact "The Sky is Falling" is one of her faves.

Cheers!
Kaf

We're all created different and isn't is so amazing! My guess is perhaps your daughter has a slightly more serious personality than our kids? Ours can be pretty theatrical. I wonder where that comes from (we be trained as an engineer-me and accountant-bereal)?

Cool Cool

We started trying to buy "extras" of our favorite music (LD, DA, Choir so far), especially when we can get really good deals on them. So far our loaner program has turned into more of a giving program. And I don't feel that bad about those good deals because more people will hear the music and hopefully some will wind up in the webstore... here!

And I guess I get to hear a little less music... but others get to hear more.

Less is more!

Uncle Stonehill's Hat

I haven't officially reviewed it, but in a nutshell it's okay, with some interesting moments, but the whole thing suffers from an element of flatness and unrealized potential. As an adult I wouldn't listen to it without good reason.

But it's a kid's album - and my kids 7, 5, 3 (my three reasons for listening) - think it's the greatest thing ever. I've had to listen to it over and over and over, and they love it. So if you've got little kids who like silly and lots of songs, you could do much worse that get this.

So there.

Ray Ware told us they had the idea for Randy to perform
the songs with different hats to put on....a chef hat for
the Pie song, a pirate hat for the pirate song, etc.
That seemed like a great idea.

I really laughed hard at the "me me me me" song....
"I am learning all kinds of twists and turns and flips,
to kiss myself with my own two lips..."

Terry said he and Randy wrote those songs while
laughing histerically at a Denny's or some place. They
were getting some looks from the other people....

I can imagine it plain as day in my head.

Rob Watson also had a big hand in the music of it
I believe.

We wish the site had done better, but it really was cursed
with only having one item. It is still going of course, but
barely. With very small sales it's difficult to even keep the
site up. It was a great idea that kinda fizzled at least
on the web for lack of support. I think Randy has performed
Uncle Stonehill concerts probably with better success.
