Otherwise, a really good article. My favorite anecdote: "So, what’s a Pentecostal kid to do when his tastes veer more toward Led Zeppelin than “Just a Closer Walk With Thee”? As a teenager, Roe made his first attempts to reconcile the viewpoints. “In 1969, I was 15 and had a group called 'The Brotherhood,’” Roe explained. “That was a Christian [rock] band, but there wasn’t really anything like that at the time.” The biggest show the band ever played was opening for none other than Swaggart himself, to an enthusiastic audience of 15,000 who cheered the band’s Christian rock music with rapturous applause. Swaggart, not to be upstaged, followed up by giving a sermon on the evils of rock ’n’ roll music."

Cool post. That was mostly what I was thinking as I read it, too. Shocked

I didn't realize Jimmy Swaggart and Jerry Lee Lewis were first cousins either - great balls of fire! Shocked

I must admit I was less than excited when I first heard Tom Tom Blues and AGFORC. I actually think I like the crows thing better now, although it did take incubate and hatch for me. But Mike at his average is still better than a lot of artists at their peak. Pleased

What do you not like about crows? It did have to grow on me but when I actually started getting it I loved it.

I love crows now. I guess the first time I heard it, it just wasn't what I expected or something - funkier maybe? Hard to say. But I love it now as much as I was puzzled the first time I heard it.

True. The other two self-titled albums ("Pray Naked" and the EP) were simply amazing...plus Mike's outstanding solo work.

For me, it's just never grown on me, as many other albums have. I take it out every couple months, hoping it would finally click, but nothing yet.

I wasn't too fond of direct at first, but just recently, i've really started enjoying it.

OK, now we're down to a THIRD right.... Roll Eyes

Tongue

But good point. How did Sticks & Stones, Pray Naked and Drowning With Land in Sight not even merit a reference, especially given the effusion of commentary on the first three albums? I thought about that, but after seeing red with the Funky Crow Thang comments it slipped my mind. Big Grin

Still, good interview. The "neurotic" observation is kinda interesting too, if not necessarily new.

I thought it was a requirement for all good musicians and Christians to be neurotic, at least to a certain degree? Big Grin

My standard prescription for those with this terrible condition: Grab a large cup of coffee and go put on "Related." It'll come to you. Big Grin

The way the refrain "We are related / we cannot keep the box that we came in" goes from mourning to determination to rejoicing in the space of seven minutes is nothing short of remarkable. Gotta let it out (let it go, give it up....) Big Grin

Related is one awesome song. It sounded good stripped down acoustic too, at the Alcoa TN show he did with Mark earlier this year. Cool

Hmmmm...perhaps "hasn't grown on me yet" would be a better description. I need to listen to it again to get a better feel for it. I've had the disc for a couple of years, and just haven't gotten into it.

Perhaps I've been lazy (or passive) in listening. Classic 77s albums like Sticks and Stones and Pray Naked have more melodic pop hooks (i.e. the U2ish "Do It for Love", "The Rain Kept Falling in Love") which make them more memorable and perhaps more accessible.

Crows is a rock and roll album that didn't immediately jump out and grab me like so much of the other 77s material.

Dorf,
You've inspired me to go back and listen to Crows this weekend.
I'll try to listen to it more actively and either
1) appreciate it more
or
2) pinpoint why it's not high on my list of 77's records.

Cool

Maybe you should take your own advice and get all your choir albums back out!

Same here.

I do like "Related" and the Radioactive Singles version of "Mr. Magoo"
