interesting..
I've been thinking long and hard about a post regarding this very thing...
And right now I'll step out on a limb to say the CD that shows their best is

Real Men Cry.

(IS HE CRAZY??)

well- perhaps- but heres my reasoning-

- it showed that the Dogs could continue without Gene

- its brutally honest-yet entirely safe. Many of these songs SHOULD have got regular CMT airplay..but sadly, no.

-other than There Legged Dog, ( the only indulgent-yet poignant tune) it is full of some of the richest songs-straight up- this is not fooling around alt/country the boys put together- under very sad circumstance.

-Terry seems to have concentrated on those things that emplified the Dogs best-new tunes with a traditional sound, and new tunes with a new sound mixed. (and a cover as well)

-Two tunes from this are Dog Staples - Certain Love and Wild Ride-

-Songs like In the Distance, The Mark of Cain, the Great Divide, No Shadow of Turning, When the Judgement Comes, they are all beautifully done works that stand up in a timeless way- the first time I heard them I was VERY surprised to see they were original songs by Terry. He pulled out all the backlog of inspiration- things you hear whispers of on K&I- that Ghost Rider tradition-(which the Dogs draw from-but seemed to have perfected here)

-Mikes Lovely Man is (IMHO) one of his best Dog contributions of all..

-Derris vocals soar on this (and Terrys are quieter..it shows his state of mind.)

-Its not forced-or hurried, and the harmonies are as rich as if Gene was there

To me what typifys a great recording is the state of mind- it helps translate into the best communication
RMC has no political tunes (Which I love, believe me) and no social statements..its rich with the things that make life what it is- what lies ahead, and its connection with where we are now.

have I made a point? or just a personal observation?.

I'd have to say one of my primary reasons for saying the Little Red is my favorite rests soley on the fact the "Jimmy" is on it.
That is one of the songs that has marked me for life. I love it.

Others reasons would be the Beatle cover of "I'm A Loser". It doesn't get more perfect than that. What a great cover...
Terry's songs on this record have stood up so well over time...and Roe's "(Jesus Love You) Brian Wilson" was a wave of revelation the first time I heard it.

A profound record that cannot be recreated.

my faves are:
1 green room serenade, part one
2 green room serenade, part tour
3 real men cry

these are so close that i can't mention one without mentioning all three. as for my reasoning: just because it's what i like. i'm not your average person, so take my opinion as opinion. Tongue Cool

btw, i really like all of the dogs albums, even island dreams which most people didn't care for. Tongue

Of the Gene Eugene era, it would have to be LRRH.

Of the post-Gene era, it would "Lost Cabin".

I love 'em all, though.

does the paste version actually have "right by dam-n" on it instead of "yes I am"?

I think my favorite is Gift Horse musically and talent-wise.

Real Men Cry is a close 2nd.

So, you see I actually liked the Dogs best as an alt-country band than rock, pop, or americana. Shocked Big Grin

I like all the others and my favorite does change from time to time.

I do have to say Nazarene Crying Towel has probably done more for me and meant more to me by pointing me back to scripture (and God's unfailing love that doesn't quit in spite of my many failures) than any other Dogs' CD. It puts me in an introspective and maybe more receptive mood. It's so "Psalmic".
