Daniel Amos Tour Road Crew 1976
    (The DA Tour Road Crew)

  • Daniel Amos begins their first circuit tour of 1976 by performing at the Maranatha Center in Reno, NV.
Terry: "There was a circuit that all of the Maranatha! bands did where you went up from Southern California through Northern California up into Oregon, Washington and sometimes into Canada and back down again. And you could almost perpetually be on tour. That became my life and really changed my life in a lot of ways. Being gone away from home became tough... it was a privilege to be a full-time musician and I never lost gratitude for that but it could be really tough at times. And the thing was back then was that you didn't stay in hotel rooms and that was kind of an unspoken rule by the church because it meant you were pampering yourself or considering yourself special or whatever. Later on, when we got a booking agent, and we had a contract - which was another 'no-no' - we specified that we wanted a hotel room. I mean that literally - we would all crash in one room. Just to have a time where you could at least get away from performing - because in some ways it's all performing. You're performing on stage, you're performing before and after, and then you'd go to somebody's house and they have a family and you're trying to fit in with that. And it's very difficult at times. And it could be a blessing and a curse. You'd have people go 'hey we're giving you the house tonight, we know what it's like to be out on the road and not have any time to yourself. The refrigerator's stocked, feel free. We're staying somewhere else tonight. Have at it.' It ran the gamut. You had that kind of a person all the way to the person that had volunteered to offer their house - but begrudgingly. Out of duty. And you could tell that they didn't really enjoy the fact that you were there. So you were always met with these unpredictable circumstances."
Terry: "One of the things early on was that we would all be in a van, and then they would tell us where we were staying. We would often be divided up. So Ed would drop everybody off at thier individual places. Sometimes these places could be clear out in the country miles away. We had a soundman Dennis Baxter with us at one point in time, and Ed dropped everybody off at their places and it wound up that Dennis was staying at some place way out in the boonies somewhere. And so the next morning, bright and early because we had to get to the next town, Ed did his rounds, You'd be inside and you'd hear the horn honking and you'd haul your luggage out there. And so the last guy to pick up was Dennis. So, we're driving and we're driving and we're driving. We finally come to this place and it's this run down delapidated farmhouse-looking place and Ed honks his horn, and the door opens and there's Dennis standing there and he looks like death warmed over. His clothes are all rumpled, he's got bags under his eyes, his hair's sticking straight up, he's got the classic 'bed head.' He's walking real slow and hunched over and he's got his luggage and he puts it in the back and he climbs in. Kind of plops down on the chair. I go 'Dennis, you look terrible. What happened?' He goes, 'aww man, it was a rough night. They put me in this bed and the place was drafty and cold, and the mattress had this valley in it, and I kept trying to turn over and I'd roll back into it. But the weirdest part is that I turned over this morning to my left and I looked and right next to my head on the pillow was an egg.' All at once, we go 'An EGG?! You mean like in a shell? Like a chicken laid an egg next to your head?' He goes, 'no, it was a cooked egg. It was over-easy.' We go, 'how did it get there?' He goes, 'I have no idea.'"

    Daniel Amos

    Daniel Amos First Album

  • The band's first album, Daniel Amos, is released. The band for the album was Terry Taylor (Lead Vocals/Guitars), Jerry Chamberlain (Guitars/Vocals), Marty Dieckmeyer (Bass), and Steve Baxter (Guitars/Vocals). During the sessions for this album, DA meets Jonathan David Brown, who would go on to produce their second album.

(While drummer Ed McTaggart had been a member of DA since early 1976, he had not yet joined the band during the time when their first album was recorded.)

    Album Info & Lyrics

Terry: "I had always had it in my head that Daniel Amos was going to be very eclectic in its musical approach. We were going to do all kinds of styles. We got locked a little bit into the Country Rock thing because I had been listening to Sweet Heart of the Rodeo and the Crosby, Stills and Nash kind of vibe - and Steve Baxter was very much into that thing. And they were simpler songs - easier to learn. And because we were suddenly playing a lot of places, we had been caught in that moment of doing those types of songs. I never envisioned Daniel Amos being a Country Rock band. We just got caught up in the momentum of it and we ended up doing our first record at a time when we probably weren't really ready to do a first record - we didn't have a drummer, we were doing a particular style of music, and probably if we had waited longer we would have had something closer to what Shotgun Angel was. That was something always that influenced me especially with the Beatles in that I never knew what to expect. I felt like Daniel Amos should be that."

Terry: "Baby steps. Falling down a lot. Embarassing. "Skeptic's Song" is one of the most embarassing, and it's one of our most popular in live performance, especially at Calvary Chapel. 'Oh, my, you'll fry, as we wave goodbye to you'. It has a certain lack of grace."

Terry on "Jesus is Jehovah to Me": "There was a guy that was an author and teacher and radio host Walter Martin, who had a show on KYMS called 'The Bible Answer Man.' He had written a book called The Kingdom of the Cults, which was hugely popular in Christian circles and it was sort of an exposure of why he considered certain supposed Christian organizations or churches or beliefs as being cultic. This is what inspired this particular song."

Alex: "I remember just liking the guys so much. They were funny people, which was not a trait of most Christian, Jesus movement, 'last days'-type bands. Also, DA was a very good acoustic/vocal group at that time--the best that I can remember."

Notes: "Love In A Yielded Heart" was originally known as "Freedom" and ""Skeptic's Song" was known as "Resurrection" in the pre-DA Jubal's Last Band days.

Terry: "I had a couple of fans - an older couple who said 'Hey, my son is in a band called Spring Canyon and they're going to be playing down at the Quiet Woman in Corona Del Mar. And my son has just given his life to Christ, and he's in this band and he's a little bit restless about it. It'd be great if you'd go down and check him out.' So, Deb and I went down there and listened to the band and it was sort of a Country rock type of deal. I had talked to Mark afterwards - after I had talked to the band and everything, and he was a keyboard player and he came into the band."

    Runaway Trailer

While traveling through Oklahoma City, DA's equipment trailer comes unhooked from their motor home and begins to pass them on the highway.
Michael Wayne Shoup, DA Roadie: "Watching it from the rear window of the motor home was something else, to say the least! First it broke lose, then it started to catch up with us! Everyone in the back is yelling, Floor It! Then it fades to the right, and starts running along the top of that rise.. Once it went over the edge, and we were out of 'immanent' danger (LOL), we all started cheering it along! Kids, right? Then we realized, ALL OUR GEAR was about to be DESTROYED!?! It finally hooked a hard left hander, went wayyyyy over on it's right side, hung there for a few, and then finally dropped back down on all fours!! This was followed by loud cheers, and a huge sigh of relief.. It was well into the night before we were rescued, and had moved all the gear into a rental H-haul... Who says, being on the road is boring? Well, actually, most of the time it is.. But, something like this will certainly wake ya up..."
Jerry: "I just remember looking out the right window of the van, thinking, wow, that trailer coming up next to us sure looks just like ours! Since we were in Oklahoma City, we rang up Jonathan David Brown (Blocker) and dropped in on him and Tammy..."

    Steve Baxter
    (Steve Baxter)
  • Steve Baxter leaves Daniel Amos to move to Colorado to play country music with the band Bethlehem.
Dom Franco (of Bethlehem): "Steve Baxter had recently left Daniel Amos, mostly because the band had been moving away from its country sound. The Shotgun Angel album was a real turning point for Daniel Amos. Side two was an indication of the direction their music was heading in. It was definitely not country! Steve Baxter and his family also made the trek out to Colorado and he began performing with us (Bethlehem), as well as acting as our booking agent."
Terry: "He didn't object to the direction we were going, but he felt he couldn't add anything to it. He sort of felt 'We're moving on here and this isn't really what I want to do.' He wound up becoming a solo guy. It was amicable. It was hard for me because I had started the band with him in San Jose, and people absolutely loved Steve's voice. That was part of the magic of early Daniel Amos. This harmony blend that we had and we could really reproduce that in a live setting."
