    Terry, on JDB: "He was a young guy, funny, knowledgeable, adept beyond his years in terms of his technical skills and his ear for music. He had engineered the Daniel Amos self-titled record and we had picked up on creative he could be and how easy he was to work with. He wasn't imposing, there were so many qualities that we picked up on the first time around. He loved Daniel Amos and we really liked him a lot. And his wife Tammy, she was a sweatheart."

    Martinsound Studios

  • Sessions begin for Daniel Amos' second album, which would eventually be called Shotgun Angel. In this first session which lasted from 1PM-6PM, basic tracks were recorded for "Black Gold Fever" and "Praise Song" at Martinsound Studios in Alhambra, CA.
    "Black Gold Fever" was recorded with 24 tracks - the first six tracks being bass and drums. There are two tracks of piano, four tracks of electric guitar, two tracks of steel guitar, one track for the clock noises, one track for whistling, two tracks of percussion, two tracks of clapping, voices and additional bass overdubs, two tracks of BGVs, and one track of lead vocals. The tapes end with an impromptu jam.
    "Praise Song" was recorded with 24 tracks - the first five tracks being drums. There are two tracks of Rhodes, two tracks of electric guitars, four tracks of chimes, celeste, and sitar, two tracks of an electric guitar with a Leslie amp, six tracks of strings, two strings tracks also include Tambourine, and there are three tracks of vocals.

    Jonathan David Brown: "Speechless, humble servant ... privileged to work on this recording with every band member of DA, and all side-men, during that era. We had major fun. But I do seem to remember that we were all trying to emulate and out-do everything we liked. So we kinda went over the top. The thing that probably made this recording happen is the deal I made with Joe Martinson at his family owned and operated studio in Alhambra, CA, 'Martinsound.' Joe was constantly experimenting with gadgets, and console modifications. He told me he could use the DA project as "guinea pig" while he performed mods on the MCI JH-400 series console and fixed other bugs in his new 'Studio B.' We probably used up, I recall, over 515 hours of time with this deal - for what probably was only about 250 actually billed. That was a God-thing. Time = better recording. But I, and we, got chastised (read: ridiculed) by M!M staff for spending so much time."

    JDB: "(To Jerry) Remember your phase shifter? I mis-spoke it once as 'shaze phister' - which you or Terry turned into 'shaved sister...' which somebody then turned into 'Shaved Fish.' At that time, I was not aware that John Lennon's 7th album was entitled Shaved Fish, and wondered how we had morphed into such madness after seeing his album cover later. THEN, I found a drawn picture in Rolling Stone or something of a guy walking and whistling - whose head was a fish with a crew-cut! That really weirded me out. - it was like we were all tapped into some "channel." I just remember laughing constantly. The endorphins really enhanced the creativity.

    Jerry: "Thanks for that story. I had forgotten that it all started with my MXR Phase Shifter! Haha! I remember that we hung the Shaved Fish character on the wall outside of The Rebel Base, where it was proudly on display for all to enjoy..."

    Marty: "That's why we all worked so well together....we we're all very well connected to each others ideas and CRAZINESS!!! I don't think anyone was shot down for any idea during those sessions. Studio B was so cozy. I remember doing some overdubs one day in Studio A, it was so huge and cold feeling."

    JDB: "Studio A was kinda 'swooshy' and large. I remember I had to re-mix 'Father's Arms' in there because I couldn't get back into Producer's workshop to re-do it. Sonically it was great, but studio B was more like Producer's ... as you said, 'cozy.'"

    "Shotgun Angel" was recorded with 24 tracks - the first five tracks being bass and drums. There are two tracks of piano, two tracks of acoustic guitar, two tracks of drum and other overdubs (CB radio, Diesel, etc), two tracks of steel guitar, three tracks of electric guitars, four tracks of BGVs, and two tracks of lead vocals.
    "Meal" was recorded with 24 tracks - the first five tracks being bass and drums. There are two tracks of piano, four tracks of vocals, one track of a "can opener," one track of a "blender," on track of "gurgles," one track of an Alarm Clock, two tracks of munching sounds (which also include the "Oh, what a meal" line), one track of a water jug and crunching, one track of a water pan, two tracks of various mouth noises, and two tracks of knives and water.
    "Days and Nights" was recorded with 23 tracks - the first five tracks being bass and drums. There is one track of electric piano, four tracks of electric guitar, two tracks of electric guitar overdubs, one track of percussion, six tracks of BGVs, two tracks of lead vocals.
    "Father's Arms" was recorded with 24 tracks - the first five tracks being bass and drums. There is one track of electric piano, two tracks of piano, three tracks of electric guitar, two tracks of electric guitar solo, two tracks of percussion, two tracks of strings, one track for a gong, four tracks of BGVs, and two tracks of lead vocals. The tapes end with an improvised jam.

    Terry: "Before I found a relationship with Jesus," said Terry Taylor, member of Daniel Amos, "I wouldn't listen to Christian music. When I found Him, I still wouldn't listen to it because I couldn't relate to it. Christian radio is 50 years behind the times. They are living the past and are reaching out only to Christians.     "Sail Me Away" was recorded with 23 tracks - the first five tracks being bass and drums. There are two tracks of electric piano, one track of electric guitar, two tracks of acoustic guitar, four tracks of strings and sound effects, one track of harp and accordion, two additional tracks of accordion and sound effects, one track with a french horn, one track of steel overdub and an oboe, two tracks of BGVs, and two tracks of lead vocals. (Track 5 was used in 1986 for Rob Watson's lead guitar line when side 2 of Shotgun Angel was revisited for The Revelation release.)

    Jerry: "The bulk of the solo was played on my '69 Gibson ES335. The mellow middle section was a vintage Fender Strat. As far as I can recall, on SA, I mostly played through a '60s black face Fender Tremelux head and a 2 x 12 Fender cab. I may have also used other '60s black face Fender amps (heads w/closed cabs or open back combos) with either two 12" custom Eminence speakers or possibly one 12" in some instances. I also played through a Leslie speaker on 'Praise Song' and 'Better.' I was doing a lot of trading at the time with a great guitar store in Long Beach, CA called Guitars Afire. I borrowed several guitars and amps (and bought a few) from them to use on Shotgun Angel."

    Jerry: "Well, yeah, everything WAS built around my solo, since the guitar was recorded first. But the way the orchestration weaves in and out in the mix and the choices (JDB) made to feature the orchestration in parts (instead of the guitar) make the solo work even better to me. Hence, my complements to (JDB) and to Mr. Stipech (aka James Gabriel) for enhancing the solo..."

    Alex remembers: "I had already played on the first album, and they had asked me to play on Shotgun. I remember coming into the studio for percussion/sound fx overdubs on Shotgun and crying when I heard the tracks. It was overwhelming. It still holds up, in many ways, even today."

  • In Santa Clarita, CA, The Canyon Band Boosters Club's Annual Multi-Drawing takes place. Tim Chandler performs as part of Canyon's Jazz Combo and entertained a large growd before raffle winners were drawn. Tim would later become DA's bassist.

  • Bill Hoppe of Aslan records overdubs for "Sail Me Away" at Martinsound Studios in Alhambra, CA.
    Bill Hoppe of Aslan remembers: "I had the distinct pleasure of performing on Shotgun Angel, though my name was mistakenly excluded from the album's credits (note: this omission was corrected on the Deluxe 2CD Reissue). I was recruited by DA and their producer, Jonathan David Brown, to create the "bomb whistle" sound effects at the end of "Sail Me Away" with my ARP Odyssey synthesizer. I also added a spur-of-the-moment synthesizer percussion effect in the middle of "He's Gonna Do A Number On You." At roughly the same time as Shotgun Angel was in production (early 1977), Jonathan David Brown also produced Aslan's recording debut, the song "Who Loves The Lonely," for the Maranatha 6 LP.
    I still remember sitting in the studio's control room (we just plugged the synthesizer directly into the recording console) with Jonathan and some of the DA guys and trying to produce the sounds that they wanted. After a bit of patience-trying trial and error (remember, this was long before digital keyboards--everything had to be patched manually), we succeeded.
    Afterwards, the guys were so excited about the entire project that they asked me to stay at the studio for awhile to listen to it from start to finish. When it was over, I felt as if I'd heard what was perhaps the Christian equivalent of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper. Yes, of course I was overwhelmed, but this was 1977, not 1999. Truly nothing like it had ever been done. I could only hope that Aslan's planned recording project would sound half as good--alas, we didn't get the chance, and that never happened."

    Terry: "On 'Sail Me Away,' we needed an accordion player. Jonathan was the guy that would hire outside musicians, so it wasn't our job to do that. We had some pretty well known Hollywood/LA people come in that did different things on the record, percussion and some things like that, the harp. He brought this guy in, Frank Marocco to play accordion on the song 'Sail Me Away.' And he was an older guy. We got to talkin' while he was in the studio, and we come to find out that the guy had played as part of the Wrecking Crew and had played on the Beach Boys stuff - 'Wouldn't it Be Nice,' and some of those things where you hear accordion, which really excited us. And we found out that he was THE accordion player in Southern California - almost anything you heard on television that had an accordion, it was Frank that was playing it. He's the guy that played on The Godfather theme."

  • The band's second album, Shotgun Angel is released. The album went on to become something of a landmark album for the band, becoming very popular with their established fans, and bringing in many new fans, as evidenced by the ever-growing crowds attending their concernts. 'Side One' of the album, with only a couple of exceptions, stayed closer to the country-rock style that DA fans had been used to up to this point. 'Side Two,' which could be called a rock-opera based on Calvary Chapel's teachings of the "End Times" and the second coming of Christ, took listeners into a more creative and experimental - and even sometimes edgy - territory musically. For the band, it was a welcome and much expected change. For some of the fans, it probably would have been far more jarring had the message not been so comfortable and appealing.

    Terry: "I appreciate Shotgun Angel now today, not because of its theology, but because of its musical vision and the execution of it. One of the people that really contributed to that was Jim Stipech who did the string arrangements. We talked to him about what our vision was in that we wanted it to be sort of an 'I Am The Walrus'/ELO-ish kind of thing. And that was his deal and he brought it full on. And for me, one of the most cherished memories that I have - one of the most moving memories that I have was being in the studio once Jonathan, who I had mentioned was the 'splice king.' Here's all of this orchestration and bits and pieces that need to go together to form this narrative - to get the continuity and all of that happening and making it work. And then, at that point, we were ready to listen to it when it was all edited together, and we turned the lights off in the studio and we sat back and let it unfold. I was in tears. There were a lot of people responsible for it, it wasn't just Daniel Amos, it was Jonathan, it was Jim.. there was so many people that contributed to it."

    Terry: "An expression of all the places we wanted to go as artists. That was the seed from which all the branches are now growing. I wanted to be the Beatles, not the Eagles. I wanted to do all kinds of music. I wanted people to love to go into the record store and buy our record because they were going to be surprised by what they heard."

  • Randy Stonehill appears on The Midnight Special TV Show as part of Debby Boone's back up band while performing "My Dangerous Heart," which Randy had written for her. Boone also performs "You Light Up My Life."
    Randy: "That was really a nice experience. I've known Debby for several years and we had been doing some songwork together, songwriting and sharing ideas. Because we do very different things musically, we though a combination of the two would bring an interesting result. When she came back from New York after recording a film soundtrack, I got her to play it for me. She was so cute. She was a little nervous about letting me hear it because she honestly wasn???t sure about how good she was back then. Even before it was released, she wasn't that pleased with it, but I listened to it and said 'Debby, this could be a hit.' Apparently I was correct in that! About three weeks later her career just skyrocketed. She was doing a lot of television; she did The Johnny Carson Show, in fact, she did every show you could imagine, because the song was such a massive seller and had such a big impact. She came to me and said, 'I'm doing a lot of TV and I always do 'You Light Up My Life', but I'd like to do some songs that show my versatility, my ability to do different kinds of things. I'd like to try something along the lines of Linda Ronstadt.' I told her I'd be happy to write something for her that would fit the bill in that style and she smiled and said that'd be great if I would. So I wrote a song called 'Dangerous Heart'. When she got the invitation to do the Midnight Special, she called me and said, 'I'd like to do your song on the show, but I'd like you to come and do it with me.' She just wanted to work with her friends. She asked me, 'Would you come and sing harmony, play the guitar... you know, be next to me, to support me?' So I said, 'I'm honoured . . . absolutely! I'll be right over.' So we went and did the show."

    Alex: "Some of TSIF rough mixes and scratch vocals were shared with me in late '77 or '78. I don't know about the reasons for the delay of the release, but in retrospect, I think that some of the Solid Rock artists' careers, while managed by Larry Norman, were also subordinate to his own release schedule, attention, ego and energies."
